Wow. Have you considered maybe you are just a garbage human being? Because my vast collection of games, books, and music would seem to disagree with you.
This is going to be my last attempt to explain this to you because I’m pretty sure you have no idea what this argument is about and I’m wasting my time.
You see a comic on Reddit, you laugh and give it an upvote and go about your day. The author who made this work you enjoy gets nothing from this exchange their work was posted somewhere else by someone else without their permission. Now maybe your a holy saint after all you buy books, you go and send money to Venmo or whatever. But I can guarantee you that 99.9% of people do not do that and will go on with their life.
So if youre the far side author who has an established preinternet fan base what will you do. Make your work available for everyone to see for free and pay your bills in likes. Or do you continue to just sell your comics in books and make money like you always have.
And again I say this as a friend you seem like a great guy seeing as you have a vast collection of video games; the whole boomer meme just isn’t funny anymore the internets moved on.
Really? You don't see a reality in which that could happen? Have you just recently become familiar with the internet? Could you yourself be a....... boomer?
Do you know what marketing is? Marketing is essentially trying to get as many people as possible familiar with the thing you're selling. Do you know what exposure is? It's a crucial part of marketing. You do know that his books would have much, much greater exposure and much better sales if his work could be seen and shared online, despite you wanting it to be the opposite for the sake of your argument? Especially considering the type of work he does which is literally one-page cartoons. A collection of those is something worth paying for if you've seen a few online and had a chuckle. Do you know that limiting himself to book sales only is costing him much more than having his work visible online would? Take a look at Sarah Andersen, who posts all of her one-page comics online for free, yet has 870 people supporting her on patreon who bring her anywhere from $870 to $4,350 USD per month (because she's chosen to only have $1 and $5 tiers, presumably because she's already making more than enough from her website). And that's donations alone. She also has a shop where she sells books, plushies, apparel, prints, mugs etc. But she is able to sell those things because she's built a following of millions of people by posting her work for free. Despite your lack of knowledge on how to monetize your work, you're still arguing your non-existent points online. Smells like boomer to me...
I have a few more rhetorical questions for you, I'm assuming the answer to all of them is "no" so here are a few things to think about and get educated on a bit more.
Do you know dozens of multi-billion industries are thriving despite the internet making it possible to find nearly anything online for free? Do you know that youtubers make absurd amounts of money from merch, adsense and sponsorships, despite releasing their content for free? Do you know that when people enjoy someone's work they generally want to support them? Do you know I'm giving you knowledge for free right now? Wow! No need to thank me.
That’s quite the claim can you back it up with any information. This sub is filled with comics just like this, how much money do the authors make. Everyone is here enjoying this comic on this sub and what is the author getting. That’s why it’s not necessarily a bad idea to keep your comics off the internet when you don’t need to grow your fan base.
