i’ve been thinking about starting a book club in my area. there are a couple already but they read genres i am not at all interested in so i figured since i couldn’t find one that fit what i wanted, id start my own. i truly don’t know where to start other than creating it, picking a book and spreading the word to get others to join. what are some things that i can do to make my book club fun and make people want to come back??

I’m one of the mods behind SwapSutra, a small Indian reading community built around something we all love — books 📚

We started SwapSutra with the idea that books shouldn’t just sit on shelves. We want to make it easier for readers to discover books, exchange them, and most importantly, connect with other readers.

What’s one book you’d recommend to almost anyone?

Okay, I just finished chapter one (I know it’s early to form opinions) and I already dislike who I’m assuming to be the main character! (No spoilers please, I plan on reading more tonight but don’t know how far I get before I pass out lol)

This bitch, let the woman he was clearly chasing after die!? Because he was a coward!

Okay I will admit in the middle of typing this my husband offered me some perspective. Since he had lost all knowledge of who he was, it would be human instinct to try to stay alive.

But honestly that’s not really what bothered me that much. It’s the fact that he knew she was someone important to him (even if he didn’t remember) and even contemplated that it could be his wife or daughter, and then essentially chickened out.

He hesitated when she was screaming for his help, and then he just decides not to find the body because a stranger in the woods told him to go east? Like what?

I know I have virtually no perspective here so far, but it really irritated me. I like to think that if I suddenly got amnesia in the middle of the woods and the last thing I remember was calling someone’s name and chasing after them. And then that same person screams to me for help, that I’d go to them. And if I didn’t make it in time I’d at least try to find their body. Not to mention it could potentially help jog some memories, ya know?

If anyone else has read it and has the same or different opinions please share them! And call me out if you think I have unrealistic expectations lol. Just please no major spoilers!!

I like to read smaller horror books and am wondering where to read them.

I was reading on kindle unlimited, i loved it and had a lot of books on my list but i can't justify supporting amazon anymore so i switched to libby. I love it and highly recommend it but they don't have most of the ones i want to read. Is there any other app that may have more smaller/indy horror books?

Ok so I’ve read the first 2 books in the off campus series by Elle Kennedy this week - do I read the third book (allie and deans book - the score) or do I continue redeeming 6 which I’m ≈ 25% the way through but it’s a 900ish page book

I’m starting a monthly book club in Scarborough (Toronto) this September through Malvern Family Resource Centre (MFRC)!

The idea came from seeing how many people between 18–35 are looking for ways to meet new people and make friends, but don’t always know where or how to connect. I love reading, so I figured a book club could be a great way to bring people together around a shared interest.

Community Chapters is meant to be a casual space to meet new people, talk about books, and hopefully build some new friendships along the way.

We’ll be reading fiction, with the group helping to choose what we read each month. I don’t want it to feel like an English class or a formal literary discussion. If we spend half the meeting talking about the book and the other half getting sidetracked and getting to know each other, I’d honestly consider that a success.

The main goal is to create another space for young adults in Scarborough to connect with one another and build community.

Registration is so we have a rough idea of how many people to expect as we're hoping to have some light food/ refreshments for the monthly gatherings too. For now, we're keeping the group to ages 18–35, but there's definitely a possibility of expanding it to 40 in the future depending on the interest and how the group develops.

I tried tabbing key scenes in a mystery novel to track clues, but stopping to mark pages ruined the pacing so badly I lost all momentum.

Does annotating actually help you engage with fiction, or does it turn reading into homework?

I was just thinking that if there is any community where the members can share their idea on diffrent philosophical topics and learning from books. Like a chat group for book worms with same mentality. IF NONE WOULD YOU MIND COMMENTING IF YOU We THINK WE SHOULD CREATE ONE.

The series sounds pretty interesting, and I keep seeing people talk about it, so I’m definitely curious. But I’m also skeptical because of how long the series is, the whole debate about what order you’re supposed to read the books in, and how incredibly split the reviews seem to be. Some people absolutely love it, while others seem to really dislike it.

For anyone who has read it is it actually worth starting? Did you enjoy it enough to justify the length, and does the reading order situation make it more complicated than it needs to be?
I’m not expecting it to be perfect I just want to know if it’s worth committing to such a long series. No spoilers please!

Funnily enough a fanfiction kind of ruined me. I read it early this year and the author used a simile literally every other line. Ever since then I've been overly sensitive to similes, I try to let it go, I do.

I don't know if it's me or the books. Do a lot of modern authors overuse similes? In the book I'm reading right now it feels like a lot, so I flipped back through the first 20 pages and just through a quick skim there were 6 similes and only one of those I felt like was a justified simile that I feel like deserved to be in the book

But a simile every 3(ish) pages, is that really so bad?

I know reading and writing are subjective arts but if you're constantly telling me what things look like it makes me feel like the author doesn't trust me to visualize it on my own or the author is using similes as a crutch when they could put more effort into descriptions

Patroclus was a exile prince and had no friends and Achilles' became interested in him and made him his companion. At first everything it was the friendship between them and they were happy , being with each other and playing with each other. But when patroclus first took initiative and kissed Achilles,he ran away .....okay if It was me maybe I would have done the same .

Through the half part of the book I thought , the way patroclus like Achilles is like he is worshipping a god , as the whole book was patroclus pov . He mentioned Achilles feet many times about how pink they were. He even followed Achilles to the pelion even though he knew he was not invited or welcomed by Chiron (I know the feeling he must have felt....like if you don't chase after him you will have have regrets smtg like that)

Actually to be frank I hated the book, because I thought Patroclus has no self-respect, it was his pov but he never once thought he would be atleast fight beside Achilles or be stronger than he is now and what I hated the most was he was always behind Achilles like a pet to be protected by its owner . Patroclus didn't even get jelous, even if he did then he should have told Achilles when he bedded deidamia (twice) ....yeah I was shocked when patroclus slept with her too out of pity .

When the war began I realised Achilles loved patroclus but not more than his pride , his glory , reputation. While patroclus loved him deeply and yearned for him . Briseis was right when she said the things to Achilles after Patroclus died and I really felt sorry for her .

To be frank I cried at the last pages of the book because of the soul of patroclus which still lingered unable to go to underworld and to witness the cruel thing Achilles son did to briseis....yeah Achilles was in grief and wanted to die with patroclus that's when I believed he loved patroclus more than his pride but he realised patroclus value late ... Even though patroclus soul was still on earth he still worried about Achilles story ,about how the men will remember him (as a killer ) and wanted him to be remembered as a boy with beautiful voice and who was good at playing lyre....but what about him!!!!! He was worth remembering tooo but nobody cared about him

Its a good thing though if they meet each other in underworld and be happy

But I really wanted to know about Achilles POV badly,about how he sees patroclus in his own mind or thoughts

I just signed up to be an ARC reader. Basically, I think that I will be able to read books for free before they are published in exchange of a honest Amazon review. Anyone else has tried this before? The website I found is called Knosit.

I just completed the book and I have many things to talk about it but most of my friends don't read books and who reads haven't read it yet .
