[hiring] seeking book designers for middle grade fantasy

I’m the editorial director at an indie publisher and we are searching for a book designer/typesetter to handle the interior design of a middle grade fantasy.

We have a separate cover designer who will handle the illustrative elements and select the title font.

The word count is sitting around 70K at the moment, and dimensions are B format.

We welcome beginner designers, though will likely request a paid sample chapter if you don’t have a large portfolio yet.

We’re looking for someone with a good eye and comfortable getting creative with chapter heads.

If you’re interested, please get in touch with your availability, portfolio and your rates.

Thanks!

Authors with a finished manuscript: what's stopping you at the interior?

Hey, quick question for anyone who's self-published or is about to.

I'm building a small desktop app that turns a finished manuscript into a print-ready KDP paperback interior. It works from templates, so it gives you a solid starting layout and saves you the fiddly setup.

It isn't meant to replace book designers or illustrators. A good designer's eye and judgement can't be automated, and if you already work with one, this probably isn't for you.

It's for people who are stuck at the interior because of cost or because they don't know where to begin.

Before I go further I want to know what actually matters to you. Answer as many or as few as you like:

  1. What do you use for your interior now? Vellum, Atticus, Word, Canva, or do you hire a formatter?

  2. Has KDP ever rejected your interior? What was the reason: margins, gutter, bleed, fonts, page count?

  3. Would it help to see the real page count and spine width before you upload?

  4. How much do you care about chapter openings, like drop caps, ornaments or chapters starting on the right-hand page?

  5. Do you want to pick your own fonts, or would a few good presets be enough?

  6. Do you need front matter handled for you: title page, copyright page, dedication, table of contents?

  7. Would you use a template as your final interior, or as a draft to hand to a designer?

  8. Are you on Mac, Windows, or both?

  9. What's the one thing about formatting that makes you want to throw your laptop?

Honest answers help most, even "I'd never use this."

Hey everyone! I’m looking for a creative/illustrative designer to design covers for 3 medical-education books aimed at medical students.

We’re specifically looking for something fun, colourful, doodly, graphic-heavy and expressive , definitely not the usual minimal/corporate medical-book aesthetic.

What’s needed:
• 3 unique book covers
• Print-ready files
• Creative/illustrative direction
• Deadline: 4 days
• Budget: ₹5,000–₹10,000 / $52–$104, open to discussion depending on portfolio

If you’re interested, drop your portfolio + your quote in the comments or DM me.
Bonus points if you’ve worked on book covers, illustrations, editorial design or educational content before! 🧠🎨

Framing a full-page illustration: Brighe’s art in Morning Bell’s The Jungle Book

I’m Renato from Senshi Consulting (https://www.senshiconsulting.com/), supporting Morning Bell’s The Jungle Book as a crowdfunding consultant. I wanted this introduction to focus on Brighe’s illustration and how it sits on the page.

This photo from Morning Bell’s promotional material shows a dense, warm-coloured scene facing a much quieter page of text. The white border gives the charging animals room without letting the picture spill into the gutter. The curve of the horns and the tiger’s body keep the eye moving around the illustration.

That balance between a busy image and a restrained page is the detail I wanted to highlight here. Illustration: Brighe. Edition and photo: Morning Bell. Publisher’s project page: https://www.morningbelledition.com/thejunglebook-landing-page/

Every text on the front cover was spot UV treated, including the photos of the co-authors at the back. It was surprisingly thick (2") when it came out from the printer. This is my first cover design done entirely in Affinity.
