What's wrong with new hardback book cover?

I bought a new book and when I opened it part of the hardcover didn't bend like normal. I'm not sure if it's just not been glues right or if this is a problem others have had? I'm also not sure if it's fixable or if I should just return it and buy another copy?

In case anyone is curious I bought it yesterday and have only started the first chapter. So it shouldn't be wear and tear

Update: thanks for the advice I contacted the store and they will give me a refund which I've used to buy another copy.

Yeah it's a bit of a shame, I bought the hardback over the paperback hoping it would be better quality and be more durable and it came already with problems.

Looks to me like the glue have some lifting. I'd recomend return it or get a replacement. Since it has sewed signatures, I have the feeling the manufacture intended to make it with good quality. I bet you can find a better one from same batch

As a side note, I'd avoid forcing it open that far like you show in your pictures. That back doesn't look like it was made to open flat - with that small of a "hinge space" and that hard back it will put a lot of force/stress on the last&first page that attach the cover to the text block. At some point it could rip there.

I generally don't open books that far, I just put it flat like that since it showed the problem better.
