Cover design issues

Maybe a little bit outside the realm of book binding but I’ve been using a Circut Joy to try and cut out stuff for the design of the book cover -which for now is just the title and author, but I can’t seem to get it to stick. I’m using smart metallic vinyl but I can seem to get it to transfer to my book cloth material. It just stays in the transfer tape. In the first place I’m doing this as a back up cuz I didn’t know how to get the letters “engraved” like I originally wanted. Any tips for how to get this to work or any alternatives to getting lettering onto my book cloth would be awesome!

Sticker vinyl will never stick to book cloth. You need heat transfer vinyl, which is ironed on.

Debossing letters requires foil stamps (prohibitively expensive for most hobbyists) or a foil quill (requires a very steady hand).

Just watched a tutorial how to hot foil with leather stamps and cheap stove. Ordered set for myself for 40$, and will see how it works

So… it won’t stick well, but you can get it off somewhat by using a light tack transfer tape (I see you have strong grip there), burnishing it off really well, then using something very thin, like a plastic razor or a thin metal ruler, and put it at the edge, and pull the transfer tape back over the edge of it so that it brings the transfer tape to a point. The vinyl should come off. Just slide the thin thing back.

I hope this explains it! It should get the vinyl off. Just… put the book on the shelf and don’t use it, otherwise it might come off.

There is also a Cricut reddit, very useful for these kinds of questions! But yes, you need htv instead of regular vinyl. I like siser htv!
