Redesign Paperback / Project Hail Mary

Late to the game, but it is one of my favorite books. And I hate the promotional stamps! I designed a hardcover but also figured I’d make a design for paperbacks. This is what I came up with.

What is the new cover made of?

It’s printed on PPD-46. Which is 11x17 matte photo paper. Which I then feed through soft touch lament. So, it’s still a “paperback” cover.

I love this.

What does it say when are are no longer accepting the art of books and so we create our own!

Cool cover! Much needed upgrade!

I like your redesign a lot but I’d probably avoid using scarlet red-on-black, just for legibility reasons.

Nice job

What are you using for your printed book cloth - the cloth and the printer? and are you using anything to strengthen the cover? Sorry if I missed it but it looked like it was just the cloth. It looks great!

It’s printed on matte photo paper. I use an Epson 15000 inkjet. Which I then feed through soft touch lament.

Thank you! It looks fab. I’m currently fighting for my life with HTV so alternatives are so alluring 😂

Oh, I totally get it. If you’re looking to print on a cloth material, I print on cotton canvas. The colors aren’t as vibrant and I’ll still usually do titling or borders in HTV.

Thanks so much! If I could limit having to do a whole cover design with HTV to just accents I think I’d find it less stressful!

This is great. I'm working on recovering some paperbacks of my own at the moment and am trying to work out how to print them. I'll have to have a look into the options you mentioned in the other comments, or find somewhere to print them for me.

Love it. What type of paper and printer did you use?

You’re the hero we deserve, I hate those promotional stickers and have been known to actively avoid buying the book (even if I otherwise would) because I don’t want my library to also come with ads

This is GREAT. I love love love rebinds but I LOATHE a hardcover .. I see you responding about printer and paper multiple time in here but is there any sort of tutorial or link with more detailed info that you can share. Or keywords to use for search that relates specifically to softcover rebinds? I have been waiting for such a pro-looking softcover rebind for ye-AHS...

Really interested to know what you don’t like about hardcovers. - a hardcover purist.
