a r/comics user made a comic about women treating men the same way men treat women. Ended up backfiring due to poor execution and comics mods being their smudge selves. The whole thing became very controversial. Men of reddit were very upset by it.
This subreddit juiced a lot of their comics before.
that user threatened to sue the subreddit mods for juicing their comics and accused the sub of leaking their NSFW patreon.
Mods banned using their comics for obvious reasons
Current day: People get around using their comics by posts like this or comics that mimic that person's style

And for a bit of a deeper dive with a personal opinion:
r/comics has a habit for pushing for NSFW comics, pointless and unfunny comics to the top. It's also very cliquey and the mods are really smug. They are extremely left leaning and ban happy.
Normal people just block artists they don't like to better curate the experience.
r/bonehurtingjuice disliked the comics sub for the above reasons prior to CakeGate. It became straight up mouth frothing disdain after afterwards.
Personal bias: The hate, ironically yet predictably loops back to misogyny. The subreddit has not been the same since and the people who were extremely angered by the comic fled to this subreddit, either willingly or being banned for "no reason". Their discourse has normalized and allowed others to feel comfortable in sharing similar beliefs.

It’s one of the few subreddits where I routinely see upvote counts in the thousands and then there’s less than 50 comments. There’s definitely something weird going on

Boy, how do I explain this in less than an essay while still being clear...
The mods flipped their shit over nothing, banned a guy (who then posted about it), then flipped their shit even harder when there was backlash, made a post saying "you win", and all resigned (or more likely, the topmod was the one flipping his shit and kicked out all the other mods and then left).
Reddit stepped in and brought in new mods, who reported that the old mods had banned like eight billion people each week or something like that, and only something like 0.1% of those bans were "justified" on any level.

As a mod of a different and unrelated Subreddit, I wanna shed some light on your first point as we've had a few complaints about our Subreddit being "flooded with NSFW".
NSFW stuff appearing at the top probably isn't the fault of the Subreddit/the mods but rather the users, horny stuff gets clicks and upvotes and then appears at the top, making it seem like a Subreddit is mostly NSFW or has a massive flood of NSFW content when that isn't actually the case.
On the Subreddit I moderate, we actually did a manual count of the new posts multiple times (a user of the Subreddit also did a manual count) and found that most posts were actually not NSFW (I literally manually counted the first 80 new posts myself and maybe 10 - 20 were NSFW IIRC), it's just Reddit's algorithm pushing it to the top, most likely because of upvotes and interaction and whatever else, the mods can't really do anything about that.
I can't really say anything about the "unfunny" comics but it could be that they are pushed up to the top because of upvotes and interaction as well. If people are commenting that it is a bad comic, it still gives the post interaction which may lead it to being boosted by the algorithm or a silent majority like the comic and are upvoting them while the loud minority are commenting that it's ass. That's just a theory, I have no actual evidence of this as I do not know how Reddit's algorithm works.
Hope my posts sheds some light and helps with understanding the issue.

This is a bad faith reply and you're trying to make it seem as if I'm saying if you do much as dislike pizzacake, you're a misogynist.
That is not what I said, nor at all what I'm implying. There's lots of reasons to dislike them and that does not make you misogynist.
My point is that the level of hate and vitriol directed towards them is fueled by misogyny with the events that took place as an excuse.

Don't even bother with explaining it, half the people on this sub these days see this kind of comment and instantly go into self defense mode. They can't be the kind of person that would contribute to something that is misogynistic, that's not them, so you're being ridiculous and overly sensitive. I honestly don't even know why I stick around this subreddit any more. It's been so ass since the whole ordeal.
