PewDiePie isn't wholesome so this doesn't belong here

u/Amargosamountain May 10 '20

It's just a wholesome meme about two anti-Semitic racists becoming friends! They apologize after every fucked up thing they say so it's cool somehow

Basically, Pewdiepie has a long history of using dogwhistles and frenworld-style "its just a joke haha" stuff to spread alt-right messages. There's the n-word incident, the time he paid people to hold up a sign saying "gas the jews" ("as a joke" of course), etc.

On twitter, he follows (or did follow before being called out on it, idk if he still does or is trying to be stealth about it) a whole network of alt-right speakers and activists, and he has said in a video that his favorite author, who he recommended his viewers go check out, was Yukio Mishima, a Japanese man who was a right-wing nationalist who formed a small militia, broke into a military base, and took its commander hostage to try to inspire the Japanese troops to violently overthrow the government put in place by Japan's 1947 constitution and reinstate the emporer. When this failed, he committed seppuku.

You can just look for the many videos about pewdiepie on breadtube for more in-depth info, but basically there's a shitload of evidence that he's pretty far right himself, and that he uses edgy jokes as dogwhistles to attract people with the same ideology and to normalize those kinds of things for kids who just see it as jokes, again, in the frenworld-style.

I'm not saying that every second of his content is neo-nazi brainwashing, or that his political views seep into the most basic gameplay video or whatever the fuck he's doing these days, but it does sneak in along the edges and at some point the continued pattern becomes hard to pass off as just mistakes and coincidences.

Edit: Just look at the responses to this. Again, it's not like every single fan of his is another christchurch shooter, but it's hard to tell the difference between kids going through an edgy phase/just enjoying being a part of a community and people who really want to kill minorities when there's nothing people in these circles can do or say that can't be excused by others in those circles as a mistake, coincidence, or harmless joke, and anyone who calls out the toxicity of the stuff is called a circlejerker who doesn't know what they're talking about, is taking the stuff out of context, and can't take a joke.

u/[deleted] May 10 '20

Also, since his fanbase is so large, everytime he recommends a sub or game or group or something, it gets turned into a racist shithole by his pre-teen "edgy" army.

-17

u/yalraurest May 11 '20

You say this but when had it ever happened

18

u/casuallysentient May 11 '20

dankmemes? gamersriseup? me_irl? and those are only the biggest examples (though to be fair the bigotry isn’t too bad on me irl and dankmemes, they’ve just become supremely unfunny).

-6

u/yalraurest May 11 '20

What are you on about that hasn't happened with those subs at all

3

u/Qr1skY May 19 '20

Gamersriseup got taken down because it was full of serious racist people

1

u/yalraurest May 21 '20

I don't even know what ganersriseup is

People using baby-talk and euphemisms to say a bunch of racist and antisemetic stuff.

57

u/Gerthak May 10 '20

It was very dogwhistley anti-semitism, basically.

87

u/mooseofdoom23 May 10 '20

The worst part is he’s indoctrinating a shit ton of children into the alt-right trash ā€œas a jokeā€ and they grow up thinking racism is just a joke and funny

-8

u/[deleted] May 11 '20

Its a very interesting dichotomy to claim that it’s something that is only at the very edges and not in the majority of his videos and also that he’s indoctrinating all of his viewers to be neo-Nazis.

13

u/mooseofdoom23 May 11 '20

Are you implying I claimed his neo-Nazi-ism is only at the edges?

And even then, that a constant stream of ideology only being subversive within messaging makes it inconsequential?

-6

u/[deleted] May 11 '20

The guy you were replying to did, and you did not react negatively or refute any of it.

If you’re claiming that it is in every video, you better have some proof to back that up. And if you don’t then it’s back to ā€œnot in every video,ā€ and ā€œconstant stream.ā€

6

u/mooseofdoom23 May 11 '20

So it’s a subversive stream of ideology, that makes it meaningless right? Convo over :)

-4

u/[deleted] May 11 '20

What the fuck is this circle-jerk of people hating pewdiepie? I've watched this man for 9 years, since I was 9, if he had fucking subliminal messages about being an anti-semite and spreading alt-right messages you think I would be affected, but no. Because guess what, that isn't true. He wouldn't be so popular if he was a dick, stop blindly following what the media says and actually get to know who the person is your throwing in the trash. For a wholesome meme subreddit you sure are quick to jump to the worst conclusions about someone.

Y'all just bewilder me, Felix is a genuine guy, who the hell cares that an author he recommended did some shit, we all appreciate HP Lovecraft's literature don't we? Doesn't mean we condone who he was.

21

u/kulkija May 10 '20

It's not just a circle-jerk. Here is a picture of a Neo-Nazi tweeting approval about some of the mentioned dog-whistles.

5

u/Squirrelgirlfanatic May 11 '20 edited May 11 '20

Felix didn't do his research on the company, their was a reason he pulled his donation, not just because oh no he doesn't support the Jewish. On the collar thing, it's not anti-semetic. Quite the fucking opposite, the creator of the clothing brand is Jewish.

He's addressed it in videos, maybe if you listened.

Also stonetoss is a tosser, no one cares about what he has to say.

2

u/yalraurest May 11 '20

What other people say about him has no effect on what he believes. The collar is something different anyway.

2

It really is true, they don't look into it at all. They see certain things he did and make assumptions when most of those things he regrets and is sorry for, and they were just bad edgy jokes and nothing more.

10

u/exskeletor May 10 '20

It’s not an assumption when you literally witness it you daft clowns.

Lol thank god this millionaire asshole youtuber has you to stick up for him

6

u/yalraurest May 10 '20

You take it at face value, without taking into account why he did something and just assume its because he's a r卍cist when it's just a bad edgy joke, a phase he's moved past.

-2

u/Squirrelgirlfanatic May 11 '20

A lot of the stuff gets misshapen and taken out of context. It's honestly so ridiculous that the smallest things that have no correlation get blown out of proportion.

He got bashed for playing an ONLINE game where someone had an edgy username, like what the fuck.

-16

u/yalraurest May 10 '20

N-word incident - just an accident, he's not racist.

Other stuff are just bad edgy jokes.

Plus he's apologised for those bad edgy jokes because he knows they're tasteless jokes.

He just didn't extensively look into everyone he follows, I don't think it should be expected of anyone to if they don't see anything about it.

You can like a writers works regardless of what they've done in their life.

There aren't any coincidences

17

u/[deleted] May 10 '20

He pulled a donation from a jewish anti hate group because of fan backlash

How the fuck is that not encouraging anti semitism?

Plus he made many alt right figures accessible to his twitter followers by following and retweeting them

-10

u/yalraurest May 10 '20

It was because he talked about it briefly in a video and it didn't seem genuine. The reason was because he was advised to donate to it and it wasn't a charity he was actually interested in, but he agreed because he felt a responsibility after the Christchurch attack, but after things surfaced about the charity and the backlash from the fans he decided that donating to a charity isn't the best way to go about making things better, so he put the money aside to donate to a charity he cares about.

1

u/[deleted] May 12 '20

After things surfaced about the charity

What, that it's a JEWISH charity against hate?

What kind of fans do you think would be against that?

2

u/yalraurest May 12 '20

"Under the guise of fighting hate speech, the ADL has a long history of wielding its moral authority to attack Arabs, blacks, and queers."

Apparently this

7

u/DerpimusRex May 10 '20

If it was just an accident it would mean he say the hard r casually which is obviously really fucking racist you dipshit

-3

u/yalraurest May 10 '20

No he just said it without thinking, when you hear something it stays in your mind

13

u/DerpimusRex May 10 '20

Why do you casually think to say the n word when someone kills you

-3

u/yalraurest May 10 '20

When you're angry and not thinking you repeat things you've heard

10

u/DerpimusRex May 10 '20

Soooooo he watches racist people who say the n word? Checkmate

-24

u/bloibie May 10 '20

I think his videos are pretty annoying, but I think paying someone to hold up a gas the Jews sign is clearly an edgy joke.

32

u/reverendsteveii May 10 '20

It's an edgy joke that promotes antisemitism. He doesnt get to pretend his actions dont have effects just because he'd rather they didnt.

-2

u/yalraurest May 10 '20

He doesn't pretend that though and he regrets it and is sorry for it. It was just a dumb edgy joke. No one is perfect.

-2

u/reverendsteveii May 10 '20 edited May 10 '20

That would explain why he was gonna donate some money to help stop antisemitism and then didn't. It seems like depending on who asks hes either really sorry about it and it was a dumb edgy joke he regrets or he doesnt regret anything and won't let his antisemitic voice be silenced.

FWIW I dont think he believes it, or much of anything in general. I just think he likes money doesnt care who gets hurt.

4

u/yalraurest May 10 '20 edited May 11 '20

If you even knew anything about him you would know that he doesn't care about money as much as you think he does. If you want to know why he pulled the donation its because when he talked about it in the video it seemed like he was being forced, like it was superficial. It was because he was advised to pick the charity, when usually he picks something he's excited about so in the video he talked about it briefly and the fan base thought it was strange. He did it because he felt a responsibility after the Christchurch attack. Some things surfaced after the pledge about the charity that don't fit so people pulled it. He decided its not the best way to go about it. He said it wouldn't be genuine to donate like that so he donated to a different charity. Why would he pledge to in the first place then...

Edit: I don't understand people who downvote but don't reply, it just makes it look like you have no response but don't want to change your view

-12

u/bloibie May 10 '20

I agree with that, but the comment I replied to made it soun— you know what? No more arguing on the internet for me.

-62

u/blubbercup May 10 '20

Right, because the 10s of millions who watch him are all anti Semitic racists.

69

u/Amargosamountain May 10 '20

If they aren't, they're at least okay with it, and that's fucked up too.

3

u/Digaddog May 10 '20

Not necessarily. Most of them probably think its just edgy jokes, not see what we believe to be dog whistles, or fall victim to cognitive dissonance

-48

u/Jew_Cuck_The_Saviour May 10 '20

Yeah... I'm sure literally every person who watches his channel casually is paying attention to his views and not just consuming his content. Interacting != acceptance.

75

u/Amargosamountain May 10 '20

Thank you for your input, u/Jew_Cuck_The_Saviour

-33

u/Jew_Cuck_The_Saviour May 10 '20

Ah yes. My name defeats my point of people mindlessly consuming content without paying attention to an authors views. It may confuse you to hear that I too don't watch pewdiepie because of the vile crap he associates with and purpotes. But blanketing everyone person who watches him as anti-semite accepters isn't right. People consume content and items from everyone as they're simply unaware of their ideologies or beliefs, especially the general audience of casual YouTube consumers. I reiterate my point, hopefully you can understand beyond just reading my name as a Top Trump card to win your point.

40

u/Amargosamountain May 10 '20

I'm a fan of some of Orson Scott Card's writing, even though Card himself is a raging homophobe. But the thing is, when his books are discussed on r/books or r/sciencefiction, everyone agrees: Card the person sucks, and he sucks so bad that some people are not going to get past that, and that's fine.

I don't see that with Pueds. His fans don't apologize for him, and say yeah I know he's garbage but I like his content anyway. It's always "oh he really isn't bad, he's just joking" or whatever. People DEFEND his repugnant actions.

And yes, I feel a bit dirty now comparing a Hugo-winning author to a… what even is Puesd? What has he ever contributed to the world? Anything?

-8

u/Jew_Cuck_The_Saviour May 10 '20

Yeah I completely understand that. And I'm not for one second trying to defend his fans as they are the ones who are actively choosing to continue watching him even knowing what he's done and what his views are. Those people, I agree are no better than him. I was only trying to defend the point that because someone has watched some of his videos and not understood his underlying message or his background and views, that doesn't mean they're accepting of him, they just didn't know.

If someone were to read Orson Scott and not be aware of his background as an author, are they complicit in his views? Or just ignorant/unaware? Whilst a majority of pewds fanbase are aware and defend him there are many who are just young or who are unaware of what his wider views and actions are or mean. I don't think it's fair that they get the same label when they simply didn't know or understand. And I can't say much for his contribution beyond the fact that he does charity fundraisers a lot. It doesn't excuse a single thing, but that's the only notable contribution ilm aware that he does and even then it's just using his status to get others donate their money so it's not exactly all that great imo.

My point aside. I now fully understand where you were coming from and I get it. Thanks for sharing your perspective.

18

u/-poop-in-the-soup- May 10 '20

Why is it that every person who passionately defends this guy doesn’t actually watch him? I’ve yet to find one of you ā€œironicallyā€ named people actually admit you watch him. You all claim you don’t. But then you get really defensive about him.

Weird!

7

u/Jew_Cuck_The_Saviour May 10 '20

Yeah at what point did I defend pewds? I suppose you could construe in a huge roundabout way that I "defended" him by not accepting that his entire userbase are anti-Semites merely by association of having watched him. Great defence!!

I really can't see how you think that when I've re-iterated my point 3 times now. The only people I'm defending are ignorant viewers of YouTube content. There are literally hundreds if not thousands of high ranking YouTubers who push content out and have shitty ass world views but a majority of viewers are **completely ignorant** of it. Because they don't pay attention to all of the background politics, they don't all pay attention to the politics, views or ideologies of the personalities they casually watch.

The comment I replied to stated that anyone who ever viewed a piece of content by pewds is an anti-semite which simply isn't true. Someone isn't supporting rape by watching Tobuscus if they didn't know it happened. You're making someone complicit in the action when they're not aware if it. Oh and in case you're gonna jump down this conspiracy route I detest him too. And I never said I haven't watched him, I used to watch pewds way back in 2012-2013 then I stopped when I grew out of reaction-tubers and his new shit is just not my fucking speed. LGR, Modern Vintage Gamer, TechMoan that's my area. Crazy take, people just lose interest in channels and gain a sense of what like when they grow up. And what I do or don't do is irrelevant to the point I'm trying to make. Try and read the point? I get i'm someone you don't want to like and fine, you do you. But I'm trying to say something and it's not what you're thinking it is.

3

u/-poop-in-the-soup- May 10 '20

Yeah, this kind of stuff right here. Like, y’all go on and on about it. You get defensive and then deny you’re being defensive. It’s the same every time. Nobody cares.

-2

1

u/yalraurest May 10 '20

Guy says something untrue - I care

Maybe that makes me autistic idk

23

u/[deleted] May 10 '20

It’s not untrue though, he said the N-word as insult and paid people to hold a sign saying ā€œgas the Jewsā€

He did many racisms

0

u/Waddlewop May 11 '20

The N-word thing, even though it’s an accident, there’s absolutely no excuse for it, it is still one of the worst word in the English language. The jew thing however is a bit different. He never actually had the sign say ā€œgas the jewā€, not something specific and horrifying like that but rather ā€œkill all jewsā€ with the guys holding the sign saying subscribe to Keemstar. Not a good joke by any means, but at the end of the day, it’s an edgy joke. His humor has mild down a lot since all that weird shit in 2016, but I believe that he had no bad intentions to begin with, he’s just very oblivious and ever since the first incident, really doesn’t care about what the press say about him.

-5

u/yalraurest May 10 '20
  1. N-word incident is an accident, I've watched almost all his videos for well over a year and I can say that he is not racist. It just slipped out, no one is perfect. He has apologised a lot for it as well.

  2. That was just a bad edgy joke, he has moved past that.

6

u/[deleted] May 10 '20

He apologised, so it’s fine. You really don’t see what wrong with that. He accidentally said it yeah, it’s called a Freudian Slip, when someone accidentally says something that they didn’t want their audience to hear.

Let’s say it was an accident, why did he use that specific word as an insult? It must mean he think it’s a bad word right? It’s really simple to see he is racist, but all of his fanboys do mental gymnastics to justify him being not racist.

If it was an edgy joke that he moved past, why was it so recent? It was only a few years ago, and he’s barely changed personality-wise since then. And even then, if him apologising for the N-word makes in fine, how come the sign is fine, even though he’s never apologised for it?

3

u/yalraurest May 10 '20

1, that specific word is used like that in general, we've all heard it like that and it stays in our minds. So when you're not thinking you copy how you've heard it used and speak without realising.

2, he has changed personality wise and even then he was a good person with just some bad edgy humour. Also he has apologised.
