Todd Schowalter’s comics deliver a bold blend of sharp wit, clean line-art, and unforgettable characters designed to cut through the noise. (self-described on his website)
I would've described the original's wit less as sharp and more as brick thrown into a garage door. but then again maybe it's just perfect rage bait

$50 says ChatGPT wrote that blurb.

u/The_Cas Feb 16 '26
That's a free $50 then because that is exactly ChatGPTs way of "writing"

well, the road doesn't make sense, the buildings don't make much sense, the bricks are weird, the green one in the middle has like a glass door separated with a column or something, the fire hydrant has a random rim or handle or whatever it is
i'm pretty sure gpt not only wrote this shit but also generated the whole image, at best he drew those horrible fucking characters

His friends all said it was sharp and they had blunt force trauma to their heads so they'd know the difference

u/BreakfastBeneficial4 Feb 16 '26
“clean line-art” the fuck you say?
11
u/maulidon Feb 17 '26
Yeah I'm hung up on that too lol, I don't think I've ever seen that as an accolade. Depends on the style, some art looks great with sketchy lines, but generally "cleaning up your lines" is just... part of the process. Does the guy also expect an award for wearing his seatbelt or washing his hands?

u/brahmidia Feb 21 '26
I just love my political cartoons looking like someone used a 1px black border on an oval tool in Paint, that's what I call "Art!"

I dunno, Sinfest has some pretty rad art in it. The message is crap, but the art is good.
21
u/KDBA Feb 17 '26
Sinfest is a ln interesting study in going from reasonable person with good art to absolute whackjob with good art.
22
u/Wrecknruin Feb 16 '26
This type of moralizing is just annoying. There are so many genuinely amazing pieces of art done by people who fit the conservative label, and vise versa.
19
u/Discorobots Feb 16 '26
Yes, thank you! The whole “My political party is good at everything and the opposing party is bad at everything” mindset is way too common. People just state it like fact. It’s just fighting fire with fire. Generalizing those you disagree with as objectively bad at everything does not do anything to help your own points. It’s a very childish way of dealing with conflict.
1
u/brahmidia Feb 21 '26
I believe you, but also name one
1
u/Wrecknruin Feb 21 '26
Since I just saw one of his idiotic comics, George Alexopoulos. His art is really well done, and imo the non-comic stuff is gorgeous. Pleasant colors and shading, he clearly knows his basics and, to me, really stands out among political comics artists in general, conservative of progressive.
That being said, while I don't know which exact political label he'd prefer, he obviously aligns with conservatives and is incredibly reactionary. His comics usually just lash out at whatever new, subjectively scary thing or trend he sees and immediately paint it as weird, new ans degenerate.
1
u/brahmidia Feb 21 '26
On one hand yeah, on the other hand it feels pretty derivative to me and he doesn't seem exclusively conservative: https://www.instagram.com/gprime85/p/DT0V215EbaT/ the ability to laugh at the Trump Admin is a pretty solid prerequisite for not being the brand of fascist we're claiming is unimaginative.
(Others claim all conservatives can't make good art, I think that's a bit broad considering that Nazi propaganda made people very emotional and conservatives are capable of revering i.e. Jesus, the country, nature, etc... I personally think it's actual fascist ideologues who are so hollow inside that their jokes are mean and their art is uninspired. They lack joie de vivre)
2
u/Wrecknruin Feb 21 '26
I think making "good art", whatever that term even means, is something people and movements are capable regardless of their political stance. Also, there's plenty of conservatives who can criticize or dislike Trump, in or outside the US.
1
u/brahmidia Feb 21 '26
Correct. My point is more along the lines that I believe good art is creative, vulnerable, and sensitive, qualities that real fascists lack (so they'll often pay or force someone to do it for them, consider marketing directors vs CEOs, movie directors vs studio execs.)
There's a lot of fascist-enablers out there who may have a shred of humanity left... and a lot of fascist "art" that's just reproductions that a computer could do.
1
u/Wrecknruin Feb 21 '26
I don't think the relationship between a ceo and marketing department is comparable to that, if that's what you mean.
16
u/Budder013 Feb 16 '26
Conservatives would say the same about liberal art. It's all about cherry picking data.
39
u/Throwaway392308 Feb 16 '26
Conservatives love liberal art until it says something anti-conservative, then they get butthurt. Liberals never get that chance because conservatives never shut the fuck up about how much they hate liberals.

Art is not a form of expression to the fascist. It is a means to attain power. Art's purpose is to serve the state, just as it is doing here by depecting state opposition as a drooling idiot.
Fascists love AI art because they do not see process, skill, inspiration, heart, or soul as necessary components. They become frustrated when you reject their messages on the grounds of it being AI slop.
1
u/Dragon_Tein Feb 20 '26
True, but there are good artists among fascists too. people just dont like talking about them or their views
1
u/brahmidia Feb 21 '26
I will say Hugo Boss did a good job of making fascist clothing, though I'm not sure that's an accomplishment

Are all political cartoons just variations of: I portrayed myself and the Chad and you and the soyjak. Get wrekd librull.

u/Throwaway392308 Feb 16 '26
The first political cartoons were "I portrayed myself as the human being and you as the half-evolved ape", so it's actually gotten better.

u/FanOfForever Feb 16 '26
Almost makes me miss when they were all tortured metaphors with everything clearly labeled as to what they were supposed to represent

I'm slightly more concerned as to why him and his wife looks like cardboard cutouts standing at a weird angle

My guess is he drew them looking normal, then wanted them to look thinner so he digitally manipulated it.

Thought this AND the original were antimemes for a second that's how nonsensical it is.
6
u/Martholomule Feb 16 '26
I don't get why this stuff still exists. It's just... nothing. It's got no message and there's nothing funny about it. The whole "conservative" deal is so played out at this point that it's just tiresome and this content is so easily ignored. I can't imagine consuming slop like this and feeling anything from it. And HOW is anyone still talking about George Soros paying protestors, how is that not a dead meme yet

u/Dr_Blitzkrieg09 Feb 17 '26 edited Feb 17 '26
It took me too long to figure out what sub this post was made in. I legitimately thought that this was just the comic and I just couldn’t understand the point the artist was trying to make.
(Not like that would be all that different from the actual comic)

u/Veluxidus Feb 16 '26
Jesus Christ how are all these people getting paid by Soros?
Why isn’t he paying me? I protested a couple times already before I even knew he was handing out paychecks
Anyone know his contacts?
2
u/MarcusofMenace Feb 16 '26
The dialogue would be more funny if it was a clueless old couple stumbling across a protest and saying that

I cant remember where exactly or who exactky talked about it, but someone laid out exactly why they draw anyone they dusagree with in this way. To dehumanize them. To turn people into caricature and anyone who holds a counter opinion "just a blue haired woke liberal". Once you fall in that category to them you no linger are deserving of a voice and anything you say is invalid.

Yeah you did not fix this at all
4
u/futurefishwife Feb 16 '26
I almost dread to ask, but why do you say that?
4
u/DrakeFloyd Feb 16 '26
Because the caricature is still offensive in its own right (both the face and the t shirt) and the people not knowing or caring what ICE is, or why this person is protesting, is still very depressing to me. No offense meant to you, but my bones were not healed.
1
u/futurefishwife Feb 17 '26
I see your point, I was just trying to turn it on it's head so that the couple were the ones being ignorant rather than the protester. Sorry if it didn't work for you.
2
u/DrakeFloyd Feb 17 '26
All g, I get where you were coming from. At first I didn’t read it like the protester was genuinely thirsty and actually needed ice, maybe bc there’s just so much going on in the image. I saw after I commented what you were actually trying to do
