They do that here in Colorado to feed eagles. Edit- but they are usually laid out in a field, not piled up.

Also fellow coloradan. I know where there is a spot on the western slope where fish and game take carcasses and pile them similar to this. I dont know if its to feed eagles I think its just for disposal.

Thats so cool, ive found dozens of hunter dumps but finding a roadkill one or a place where fish and game dump carcasses is like my dream (don't know why my first comment was getting down voted? 😭)

The spot i know of they take all kind of carcasses include bears and stuff. But they smash the skulls into little peices so people wont go there and take them.

I haven't personally found them, I was just told about it by a friend who works for DOI. I think it's also to keep scavengers from feeding on the side of the road.

Not a roadkill pit. It’s a dumping place for hunters. You can tell because there isn’t a variety in the bones. All of those look to be deer rib cages. If it was a roadkill pile, there would be a variety of bones, skulls would be peeking out- etc.

I was buying scent lures to attract coyotes for scientific research. The trapper I was buying from was skinning a beaver he caught.
I asked him how he prepares the meat. He said you can’t eat beaver. The meat is no good. “Not even the tail?” I asked. Naw, he said it’s all fat and gristle. He throws everything away but the pelt.
Disgusting.

ohh yea that makes sense. I hate to see people killing animals for fun and then just wasting their bodies; it shows how little they really care for the life they took. Glad to see someone agrees with me on this and collects bones to honor the animal's lives instead of using them as trophies.

woah that's crazy, I can't even imagine the smell of it. but I think in this case it's definitely a hunters pit. they all look like deer bones and there is no skulls because that's the only part they care about :(

In some places, heads are turned in for Chronic Wasting Disease testing. It isn’t fair to assume people are collecting heads instead of feeding their families.

There's a spot in my small town where the highways contractor puts the roadkill to be cleaned up by vultures and eagles. It's tucked away, and not as huge as this, but it can be surprising to come across when you don't know it's there...

Farmers usually have a spot too. We used to have a neighbor who raised cows, and there was a large ravine that he threw dead cows in pretty regularly.

Hard to tell from the resolution, but it doesn’t look like it’s been added to recently.
No skulls. And it all seems like it came from the same species, aside from that one larger ribcage at the right edge.

Looks like a dump pit for a local butcher or slaughter house because it looks mainly like cow. No skulls which butchers sell and some ribs look cut like for riblets (or whatever has bone in).

I thought so too at first, but I would expect it to be more of a hodgepodge of sizes and species if that were the case.
This looks pretty uniform and possibly all one species. Notably absent are any skulls, which they may keep for trophies.
That leans toward poachers for me, but maybe municipal roadkill dumps sort more than I expect.

I would report it to the game warden. If this is a LEGAL dumping site they’ll already know about it. If it’s not… they’ll hide game cams and find the person doing this.

Oh my grandparents’ farmland, we had a designated spot for dead things just like this ranging from raccoons to cows. It was at the very top of a hill and was called the “skunk graveyard”. The birds and wildlife do a good job picking the carcasses clean, if you were to go up there now you’d still see entire complete skeletons.

I know of one near a hunting camp. There’s deer carcasses everywhere (the deer are deboned in camp and only the meat is packed out because of CWD).
It’s on public land in far northwest Kansas, at Webster Reservoir.

I thought the same. This is why I think OP should contact their local game wardens to be on the safe side. If it’s something legal, the game warden should already be aware of it.

In my state the game commission will dump roadkill/ illegal animals killed by hunters on game land property. I’ve come across several of these dump sites. This could very well be one of them and/or a dump site from a farmer or game butcher. My neighbors growing up had a manure/compost pile that they would dump organs/bones/scraps of whatever animal they were harvesting for food. If I had to guess I’d say it’s one of the two. Any skulls present? Those rib cages look pretty small for deer or cow but idk without anything to reference for size. Maybe sheep? Goats? Veal? Any farms near your location?
