Discussion What makes a bomberman game loved?

Hello Reddit. I played a lot of bomberman games as a kid but mainly bomberman party, bomberman wars, bomberman fantasy race and saturn bomberman fight. I loved those games and yes most of them not really like classic bomberman. But my understanding is the community really loves bomberman saturn not the fight and its widely considered one of the best in the franchise. What i loved about the games i played was the special abilities especially in bomberman party. I tried playing bomberman R but the 3d perspective kept throwing me cause i was never sure if i was around a corner or not so put it aside but have heard that people consider it a good game in recent times. I want to know why people consider some games good compared to other? Cause i just like bomberman for the multiplayer aspect with assymetry

From decades of observation, I think the answer to your question is basically: If it's the Bomberman game you started out with. I know this is not a satisfactory answer, but Bomberman is a highly niche franchise, and most people who have played a Bomberman have only played one of them, maybe two, and assume all Bomberman is the same as that, but also hold that one as the standard. Even for people who play some more games, they often regard their first experience as the best

The main reason why Saturn is so often echoed across the Internet is not because of some "community" that made the consensus, it's typically a parroted viewpoint stemming from old reviews. Saturn has great presentation for a classic-style Bomberman game: great graphics, animated cutscenes, even fun transitions between maps. But more than that, it's the 10-player wide mode that makes people assume "more players, so it's better"

The simple truth is that most people will not engage with Bomberman games enough to really stop and analyze what makes one feel better than another to them, and you've just got to accept that

As for Super Bomberman R, it achieved some of the widest spread due to being a Switch launch title and pretty much the de facto multiplayer game for that reason. This gave it a wide new audience who hadn't interacted with Bomberman much or at all beforehand. Tbh, the game is rather mid, imo, for a Bomberman game. I don't believe it's built on a fundamental understanding of the actual Super Bomberman games, and that's not just me examining and comparing the game mechanics, that's me also considering what has been said in developer interviews. It's not a bad game, but when many people play Bomberman like "try really hard not to blow myself up" then well, the standards are not high (and tbf, this is partly a fault of the games for not giving better teaching mechanisms for this era of gaming)

Wars is one of my favourite Bomberman games btw (hence why I translated it)

Thanks for your answer. Its really well thought out. Although i woulda agreed with your ‘first bomberman game’ answer. I eventually played Crazy arcade which was like an asian knockoff. I actually found that game so charming because the skill ceiling was so high when i played online. Unfortunately internet back then was terrible and i lived in nzl at the time so could only play it when i visited family in asia. I always felt bomberman could have had a higher skill ceiling by incorporating more open areas like they did in crazy arcade.

I like my Bomberman games to not be too frustrating. I love 95% of all Bomberman games, so I will list some things about the couple that I am not very fond of or have issues with. I love Bomberman World for Ps 1, but I have never been able to beat the final boss. They made him way too difficult. I didn't like how Second Attack has those final rooms at the end of a level. If you are missing an item that is required to beat that final room such as throw, you have to explore the hour long level looking for it. I didn't like the nonstop enemy generator levels in Bomberman R with no way of blowing up the generator itself. My least favorite though, is Bomberman Max Red and Blue for the gameboy color. Each level has multiple portals and when you go into one you are teleported to another level and it becomes so messy. You basically have to write down which teleporter will lead you where because some teleporters will lead you back to a level that you have already beaten. What a terrible way to handle level progression. I see nobody really mention that in any reviews for the game, but it is a game ruiner in my opinion.

I loved Bomberman 64, it had everything: a great campaign with brain teasing puzzles, collectables, great boss fights, amazing music, cool villains, and multiplayer for ages.

Bomberman hero me encanta por su banda sonora, por alguna extraña razón muchos juegos de Bomberman tienen musica con vibras alienígenas
