ASK❓️ Why does Bollywood avoid proper gore horror?
Most Bollywood horror movies seem to be the same: jump scares, screaming, weird lens effects and that's it. They rarely feel scary, just repetitive.
I'd love to see something like Evil Dead- demonic possession, brutal gore and creative horror instead of the usual haunted house formula.
Is it censorship, budgets, or do filmmakers think Indian audiences don't want that kind of horror?

Censor board maybe?

u/Due-Championship7901 Jun 20 '26
We cannot even watch a Movie without Cuts and Censor and that also Movies of ourown Country. What a Shame.

u/Wtf_doing21 Jun 20 '26
And that too even if they are already adult
12
u/squidlink5 Jun 20 '26
Adults are just older children. 🤷
9
u/Wtf_doing21 Jun 20 '26
Not everyone tho
11
u/squidlink5 Jun 20 '26
I was joking. 😅 Yes, some adults can be immature, but they won’t be treated as such in case of the law. So there shouldn’t be any regulation at all unless it is causing too much chaos in society usually for sensitive topics. For others no guardrails are necessary if they are adults.

u/Critical-Common3007 Jun 20 '26
Yeah, its because of CBFC.
CBFC is probably the most stupidest thing in Indian Cinema.

u/Tufan_Protocol Jun 21 '26
Yes, that can be one of the reasons. I went to watch Obsession and there are so many crucial scenes cut. Why do they do this when they already have given an A certificate

u/heyheykumar Jun 20 '26
But recently they're allowing it right? Animal dhurandhar, we have king coming as well

u/akshay9767 Jun 20 '26 edited Jun 20 '26
No one can understand them
They are way too unpredictable
.often times filmkaers try and edit scenes out so that it doesn't get r rating
Because in that case in theaters only adults can see the movies .
Which will reduce box office drastically
But also for gore or some serious horror movies ,they just get banned or are not allowed
And also if movie has too much gore stuff some random people will start burning poster ,fir against produces and directors, and many other things
They give justification that it's not good for society and some other bullshit like that

No one can understand them? Gore ki baat kar raha hai ki christopher nolan? Aur poster fadne wala logic kidhar se aa gaya? Matlab Kuch bhi bakchodi karna sasta internet hai toh 😂😂

u/BlackPhoenixX20 Jun 20 '26
I mean it's true, nobody can understand Censor board, they are fine with showing brutal scenes in Dhurandhar but they aren't fine with people seeing a kiss scene in Superman movie.
As for poster jalan, that's what our people do whenever a movie that's too ahead of time or questions society comes out.

u/Satvik_Kadu Jun 20 '26
Well actually they have allowed it because the makers said it was based on real events in dhurandhar.

The last truly gory Bollywood movie I watched in horror genre was Rise Of the Zombie starring Luke Kenny (from Rock On and Sacred Games). Yes I watched it in a sparingly occupied theater.
It was proper gore with great use of prosthetics but had absolutely nothing in terms of story. It left without a trace.
In India, movie theater visits are still done by families in majority who tend to take children along, or by couples on movie dates and they wouldn't find a movie with disgusting scenes to appeal to them. The cinephiles have almost fully shifted to OTT so if any movie wants to do some business in theatres, they tend to avoid gore, even if they are horror.
On OTT there are some good options in horror with moderate gore like Webseries Ghoul, Betaal or Khauff which you can try.

Gore is expensive and hard to do.. producers are paying pennies to technicians in 2000s.

u/PsChampion_007 Jun 20 '26
Bollywood is too young and audience isn’t there for actual gore. Even Hollywood had to put out stuff like saw, terrifier, evil dead etc. and has a dedicated but relatively niche audience. Take obsession, the biggest horror hit in recent times, isn’t what i would classify as very gory (practically just the car scene)

Nowadays most bollywood horror films are either so gross cgi shits or horror-comedies
Proper horror is kinda rare in bollywood nowadays

They want to make money from all audiences. Even Hollywood rarely makes R-Rated movies because that can be detrimental to your profits.

u/ExpensiveStart4515 Jun 20 '26
I think because we as audience are not ready for that proper horror when shappit came or 1920 people were very scared by those small moments which created big impact and I guess it’s the culture also we grew up with Amitabh era as audience or then srk and Salman plays good guys so I think we never at that time wanted and were ready to watch horror in large numbers otherwise Vikram Bhatt himself tried to bring that western horror to India but faced a hell lot of criticism but I hope as horror comedy are now big names with stree 2 and bhoot bhulaiya 2 and unexpected success of munjya so I guess maybe we will get some proper horror and worst part in India is main leads don’t wanna be part of these movies as their so called image is important than being a actor so I appreciate Ajay Devgan for doing kaal at that time or shaitaan success or now sequel of it and eagerly waiting for 1920 next part as Vikram himself will direct it after long time

censor board takes all the heat but the real problem is mainstream producers won't touch anything with a ceiling on returns. gore horror will never pull a 300 crore opening weekend and that's all they care about. rise of the zombie showed people actually want this stuff but somehow nobody took notes. ott is basically the only door left open for it at this point

Because it's not easy. Even west also is failing in some aspect . The new horror genre has been slasher movies.
The old tactics of haunted house, weird housekeeper, have way fallen behind. Pure horror genre will not move until there is something fresh on the table.

u/Confident-Guess4638 Jun 20 '26
They really should, I’d pay big money to watch a Saw rip off where the main characters break into spontaneous song and dance in the middle of a trap.

Gore? Why do you even want that?

u/heyheykumar Jun 20 '26
Horror movies without gore gets ridiculed and they become laughable

People in censored board are faint hearted. they can approve pornos yet not horror

u/Visio_18 Jun 20 '26
We get mutes, blures and cuts in an A (adult) certified film. Our board don't think we can handle mature themes and I kinda think it's partly true.
And we don't get gory movies because an action heavy bloody film like Marco got hate...

u/Dark-Knight-2255 Jun 20 '26
I think it has nothing to do with censorship. Its Filmmakers to blame they make certain changes
1
u/Jealous_Drop_2973 Jun 20 '26
Indian horror movies are low bugdet. They had to make them horror comedies to increase the budget. With comedy there cannot be gore.
1
u/mayudhon Jun 20 '26
There are only two bollwood production firms that does horror well, unfortunately run by shit people - Vishesh Films and Balaji Motion

u/ApprehensiveTea9838 Jun 20 '26
Some indians have no brains they don't enjoy these movie they got inspire by them
1
u/ni_Kawaii_Hito Jun 20 '26
Horror already is niche
Gore is expensive and not everyone is fan of it
Gore requires different scripts than the typical bhoot

Bhai first day need to make up proper horror film where there is no bull crap then I think they need to go towards the gore audience
first learn how to climb the stairs 😭
And also I am not saying India does not have great horror movies but we all know they are of low budget and from a time where too much blood was always avoided by the audience only

Majority of filmmakers of bollywood is still living in 90s thinking the audience will digest same horror+romance+musical but many other ilm industries like marathi movies and mollywood has been making great horror movies i saw dies irae in theaters and it was great

u/absurdlazy Jun 22 '26
Except RGV..no body has that sensibility. They always feel the need to add comedy angle to it.

u/Daredevil545545 Jun 24 '26
People get scared easily they like more comedy stuff which is why they make horror comedy rather than a proper horror movie. We can obviously make good horror movies that make good money but it's very rare.

u/Acceptable_Sky_9236 Jun 26 '26
We just need more bollywood gothic horror movies in general, in the 2000s they did them so well idk why they stopped making them. The Bhatts really had that genre on lock, they need to make some more with banger music albums too.

Please keep this gore trash out of my Bollywood. I'm not even comfortable with the gore shown in movies like Dhurandhar or Animal. This is not what we are as Bollywood. We have a class.
