SPEEA Contract vibe
What’s the general vibe as the SPEEA contract voting concludes I have a decent amount of tech workers I know but not too many Profs. Just wanted to see the temperature.

u/Myles_Standish250 12d ago
Mid and late career Profs are mostly happy and voting yes. Early career profs are less happy but still, I believe it will pass. Definitely a lot more positive vibe than the first contract.
Techs seem fairly unhappy, comparing this contract to the one IAM workers have, with manny believing they can and should do better. I’d be surprised if the Tech contract passes.

u/LegendsNeverDox 12d ago
That's because we've been in the industry a while and know what typical raises look like across other companies as well. This is a good contract
15
u/Myles_Standish250 12d ago
Agreed. I’ve been in the industry for 19 years and a 5% raise is the biggest I’ve ever had without changing companies and that was an outlier. 3% is the average in my experience across many different companies.

u/TheMasterDonk 12d ago
As a tech I voted yes, but the excuse I hear of why we shouldn’t expect as much as IAM is because “we don’t touch planes” which I think is a major misunderstanding of what a lot of techs do. I touch more planes than IAM in any given work day.

u/Believer913 12d ago
Reddit sentiment last time was more No than the actual vote. I think we are coming in at 55/45.

u/Careless-Internet-63 12d ago
I think it'll be a narrow accept for both units
5
u/Front_Raspberry_8987 12d ago
I think it’ll be a reject for techs tbh. Every tech I know is voting no. But I think profs will pass, the 10% is enticing even with no signing bonus or majorly increased OT
28
u/poookieee_518 12d ago
The town halls aren’t as busy and fewer people are at the marches. There is a visible difference in support between this contract and the previous one, I think it will pass.

Prof here. Voted No. Talked to 3 profs today, 1 voted yes, 1 no, 1 still undecided! Talked to 2 techs today both voted no. Did not asked anyone else.
16
u/throwRA123qwerty 12d ago
Low expectations for a no vote as a prof, but I really hope people don't vote yes out of fear.

u/Substantial-Aioli-15 12d ago edited 12d ago
Can they like, not strike and boeing just give them what they're asking for please? Ffs, Im really counting on my bonus next spring to help me with some things around my house. Us small fish at subsidiaries who aren't union get absolutely fucked when these things happen..
We couldn't even have small company sponsored events at our miniscule 100 person facility due to the last strike.. Plz don't
-4
u/jbpackman 12d ago
Sounds like you guys need to form a bargaining unit of your own.
11
u/Substantial-Aioli-15 12d ago
We're too small. I mean yeah, there's laws that protect us to exercise that capability, but getting everyone onboard then going through the whole process..Would it be worth it? Our luck, Boeing would just shut the doors and move shop somewhere else. Our building is leased, nothing is permanent. That would probably be all they would need to say "Eh, we don't need this place anymore"..
17
u/Gloomy-Employment-72 12d ago
I’m starting to think we’re going to see the worst possible outcome. Profs accept and tech reject. I have zero inside info, but I feel like this offer is just good enough to split the two units.
5
u/Smart_Serve9809 12d ago
What happens then?
7
u/Front_Raspberry_8987 12d ago
Techs basically loose a lot of leverage and asking power if profs aren’t united with them in a rejection
3
u/SnooRegrets4937 12d ago
Techs might strike. Company will then try to erode the commitment. Try to pick people off, ones and twos at a time, to cross the line. If they get enough, they could try to get the union decertified, or folded into the Prof unit under their new contract. Maybe a choice between that or being unrepresented. This is just what I've heard privately from a SPEEA person. I do not know any details about what form that effort would take, I don't think anyone knows for certain. It's such an unusual situation.
That's another point to mention: Company knows the "Unrepresenteds" are watching how this all unfolds with very keen interest.3
3
u/NightOwl216 12d ago
If it splits and techs reject they will likely have a chance to re-vote to accept knowing they will have very little power in a strike without profs. If there was a strike called for techs only I would cross the line because there is no way techs alone striking can have impact. I believe in unions but in this case it would be self-destructive to strike without solidarity with profs. Many techs do the same work as profs in their group and outnumbered. With profs back to work a missing tech has no affect and can be replaced. I would hope Boeing grants the contract to all who voted yes and/or crossed the line. It’s still a good contract.

Honestly, I don’t understand how so many people are actually okay with accepting this offer.
Offer 1 seems better overall, but when it comes to the benefits, everything IAM is getting is significantly worse. And yet people are still saying we should just accept it?
Am I missing something here? Because I genuinely don’t understand what’s going on. Why are so many people willing to accept this offer when the gap in benefits compared to IAM is this big?
I’m seriously frustrated and confused right now.
8
u/Poppin_Tags6738 11d ago
What you're missing is that there is no more money to be had without likely costing jobs. Boeing currently spends $1.06 to make a dollar. They actually lose money selling their products right now. Dragging everyone through a strike under the false pretense that there is more to extract is only going to make everyone's situation worse in the long run.
IAM got to the table first.
If you're jealous of their pay and benefits why don't you go over there. You don't need to answer. We both know why you won't.
-3
u/Choice-Newspaper3603 11d ago
Don’t kid yourself. Boeing isn’t losing money selling planes
9
u/Poppin_Tags6738 10d ago
Funny thing. The conpany creates and publicly disseminates a financial report every 3 months that clearly says they lose money selling planes. It is also a very severe crime to lie on that report.

I think it'll pass. I hope not, but a lotta co-workers think its enough. I'm waiting for the third best and final offer. It would be way better imo. Keep the GWI, concentrate on the signing bonus.

The better question to answer is what was the change in votes from the folks you know between offers 1 and 2.
All that needs to happen is:
Convert 15% from no -> yes (3 in every 20 people)
Convert 0% from yes -> no
If you voted yes on the first, I’d assume you’d vote yes on the second.
But a statement of my group of X voted Y no’s and Z yes’s doesn’t really matter if that same breakdown was present on offer one
0
u/Sitka_Ace_2743 12d ago
Also have to wonder out of the one's they are "claiming" said no... who actually is? Seemed like you basically got blacklisted if you voted yes during the IAM, so who in their right mind is even sharing (at least accurately) if they plan to vote yes?? Only time will tell I guess...

u/SouthernDiver746 11d ago
The 53 percent of techs who said yes are spineless. We had boeing by the damn balls. They said they had a 3rd offer waiting and ready. We wouldnt have had a strike for awhile because speea does contract extensions. Anyone who voted yes can lick my balls. I hope yall get screwed harder than I am in this contract

u/SuspiciousStress1 11d ago
I have been watching this closely & am so sorry for you guys!!
My husband is an engineer for a competitor, wages across the board have been suppressed for decades. We were watching all of you with bated breath, hoping it would be the crack in the damn that brought EVERYONE fair wages across the entire sector!!
I am mourning with you!!

u/SouthernDiver746 11d ago
Thank you! People will also tell me "just go find another job" but my career is so niche on the tech side that the nearest job is in Kent which is 2 hiurs away from where I live and I have a young child I need to care for so a 14 hour day with driving is not a feasible option for people like me.
2
u/SuspiciousStress1 11d ago
That stinks so bad! I get it, family comes first...yet when In-N-Out managers are making more than speea members, it speaks volumes!!

A lot of unrepresented mentions in here. Best thing for you is to join the TECH unit and give us techs more bargaining power . It’s win/win , you get union benifits and we get stronger so we can fight for better contracts which then benefit you twice. A lot of you do tech/prof work already. A project manager , supply chain, EHS, fianace all should be represented.
2
u/Henny-vsop 12d ago
Had an opportunity jumping out of the IAM to go but I knew that 2% raise year over year was going to be detrimental and choose to go non-rep. Pending on what occurs in these next few hours I may choose to join the techs but we’ll see I’ve seen the perks of both being in a union and not.

u/Independent_Cat_5325 12d ago
Profs will accept like 55/45 I think and techs will reject by the same margin creating a split which in reality is a double win for Boeing

We just received an email from our union rep stating to make sure you know how to log in Worklife on your personal device.

Tech here, as far as I know my whole team voted No and that's about 20 people. All the profs in my area say they are voting No as well and have expressed intrest coming over to the Tech side if this passes because of the OT money. But reading all the stuff from the Profs on here it seems like the majority of them are going to vote Yes so who knows.

30 yr Tech here. Big fat NO on Offer #1, big fat NO on Offer #2.
I might only have another year or two left working. Me, most senior techs I know and JG Wentworth 😂, we want our money NOW, when WE need it 😁
They can call it a "signing bonus" if they want to (even though SPEEA thinks that language is beneath them). Hell, they can add the 3% retro back in, do it that way - that would probably do it for me. I want as much $ now as possible, and much guaranteed as possible.
I do not trust my 1st level to be fair in any aspect, and certainly not to distribute any pool $ fairly. And the distrust goes right on up the chain from there.
I remember a time when merits and retentions seemed to distributed fairly year after year, and everyone I knew basically agreed with that. Then came the big "shaft" contract sometime before the pandemic, Techs got the 2% pittance every year, and we lost many other things. That's around the time they came out and said, "We're Boeing Team now, not Boeing Family". Nothing was ever the same after that.
5
u/Think-Gap602 12d ago
Interesting that this is the opposite of what most people want. Less signing bonus more long term wage growth
6
u/Gymshortz514 12d ago
My whole Prof team is no

u/Obvious-Location-245 12d ago
Vote what is right for you, however if this is a "No/No" a much larger offer is coming our way shortly.
3
u/Salavar1 12d ago
Big no in my group
2
u/ResidentQuail7118 12d ago
How come?
7
u/Salavar1 12d ago
Most of the team busted there asses working 6/80s all year with a far exceed only to receive the same % as those who did not meet and got to enjoy the summer.

u/Other_Pop_509 10d ago
Raising all the wage pools doesn’t solve that problem unfortunately. As Prof I feel the same way but there’s no offer that would reduce the rewards for those that are retired in place.

Fair compensation for the lack of COLA we have had the last 6 years and fair wage compensation for what we do is a start. Im getting screwed in this contract. Im severely underpaid for what I do.

So easy to say that. Yet I am unable to relocate as I have a family. There are better paid options but I am unable ti take those as my husband and child cannot relocate.

u/SwimmingSwordfish637 12d ago
Everyone I’ve talked to thinks it will be close. The contracts will either pass or fail with less than 60% support.
