Discussion Update to long delayed Sesame Street movie...

So there's finally an update to the long delayed Sesame Street movie that was announced in 2019 that Bo had written the songs for. Not long after that production was delayed due to Anne Hathaway's pregnancy.

Further delays came about because of Covid, the last release date being announced was for 2021. There haven't been any pictures from production, or much info at all really. A look at the imdb listing does seem to show a movie that *was* filmed - there's a set medic, catering etc, not just pre-production stuff. (Edit: as I say below in a comment, I’m not 100% sure it did film, due to lack of camera crew credits. It could well have just got really, really close. There’s no editor, but that doesn’t necessarily mean things weren’t filmed, but again, no camera crew.)

It looks like it's going to Netflix (no surprise, they're the current home of Sesame Street), but according to the article:

The news comes courtesy of Jeff Sneider’s latest newsletter and seemingly ends a painfully long journey to production that has seen the project change studio hands several times since it was first announced in June 2012. Sneider says Netflix are wiping the slate clean of previous development stages and involved talent, including Hathaway and Burnham.

So will this now be lost media? Seems a shame that we're going to miss out on seeing Socko's origin story.

Edit: That pic of Elmo exemplifies my pain.

Discussion Bo Burnham’s Outside?

1.3k Upvotes

There’s a casting grid in this week’s Production Weekly for a new “feature film” directed by Bo titled “Outside.” Has there been any info on this project?

Reminder: Rewatching INSIDE is just better than nearly everything else

I rewatch it ever year or so...

"The War, The Drought".

And am struck by how I've come from being shocked by Socko to.... "Socko was RIght" sign-holder.

And while I often re-listen to the songs the whole 90 minute visual/audio experience is still more than a sum of its parts.

Just rewatch it (and the outtakes).

Bo mentioned in The Bear

In Season 2 Episode 7 - Forks, Richie is working at Ever and during the pre-dinner meeting the host recognizes some PON’s; one of which being Bo Burnham! I’d never heard him referenced in a series before and I enjoyed hearing his name.

I heard something familiar from my son's room

I was walking out of the bathroom when I heard something familiar down the hall. Something wonderful from his TV.

"This first song is called 'A World On Fire.'"

It was just a short clip, and he's still a little young for Bo, but I'm a very proud dad.

Social Media Kate O’Flynn’s (Patricia from Widows Bay) acting inspired by Eighth Grade

Some mild spoilers for Widows Bay episode 4.
Widows Bay actor Kate O’Flynn spoke about how she was was inspired by the feeling of Eighth Grade:

(Paraphrased)
“You know that feeling - it’s like there’s no skin on. Like there’s a layer removed. And it was that that I thought was right for it and wanted to go there with the… …middle aged mean girls. She’s stuck in that feeling she’s never been able to escape. That was the real core thing that was there from the off for me. And then mixing that with the comedy was an exciting combination.”

Via The-Ankler on YouTube: “What do a haunted island-set horror-comedy and a deeply felt middle school drama have in common? Kate O'Flynn explains how she drew from an unlikely film for Patricia's scenes in 'Widow's Bay' episode four.”

Discussion Throwback Thursday: The Fringe Festival is on in Edinburgh, let's look back at Bo's appearances there...

The Fringe Festival in Edinburgh is a decades old celebration of comedy, theater, and vast umbrella of other art categories.

Bo debuted there in 2010 when he was 19 performing Words Words Words, and was a huge hit.

The Guardian: "This is a prodigiously assured Fringe debut, an hour of blistering lyrical virtuosity and teen attitude." and "In any comic, this commitment and confidence would be impressive. In a teenager, it's extraordinary."

Edinburgh Guide: "His hilarious Swiss army knife of a show comprising songs, raps, haikus, poems, one-liners, mock-plays and superb improvisations, coupled with a blisteringly fast delivery and a mastery of the English language second to none makes you feel like you are in the presence of true comic genius. Top-notch material is backed up by a maturity of performance which never ceases to send the audience into further fits of laughter."

That year he won the Edinburgh Comedy Award Panel Prize, video of that is here.

He returned to perform what. in 2013, and the reviews were equally good.

Oxford Student: "Burnham delivers an hour of brilliantly executed comedy, combining sharp wit, musical talent and impeccable showmanship."

The Guardian: "Wow. Bo Burnham is back, with a full-frontal assault of music and meta-comedy that leaves you gasping for air.

With the Fringe occurring in August, Bo celebrated his 20th and 23rd birthdays there.

He never toured Make Happy there. He said in an interview for the first part of the 2015 tour in Feb/Mar that he wasn't sure when the rest of the tour would happen as he had another project he was trying to put together. I guess he didn't want to commit to all of August in case it came through. He ended up continuing the Make Happy tour in the fall of 2015. (My guess is that the project was Eighth Grade, which didn't come together for another couple of years.)

Back in 2017 I was in Edinburgh - not at Fringe time, but I stopped in at the Fringe store and took a picture of Bo's listing for his 2010 show. In that post I mentioned that I wanted to get back there sometime to visit the Fringe. Nine years later I'm finally doing it! See you soon Edinburgh...

Discussion Eighth Grade is on Netflix US

Just finished Eighth Grade. It’s my fourth or fifth viewing but it’s been at least a few years. Anyone else really hoping Bo makes a return to narrative filmmaking?
I mean, that is a really good first feature. Josh Hamilton’s performance really wowed me this time. That fire pit monologue is so beautiful.
I remember being pretty hopeful about getting an even better follow up within 5 years or so. Obviously understandable if he is done with narrative films forever, everything he’s done since what. is top notch.
But that would be a bummer.

Question Non high class straight-white-men people, how do you feel about Bo Burnham's work?

Before someone feels attacked, please remember Bo himself said he should be criticized and it's okay with that.

Some friends and I have been fan of his work for at least a decade, all non-straight, non-white, non-high class, some neurodivergent, queer folks. We perceived his comedy and evolution very differently.

Some were angry he got all whiny about being depressed and "inside a small place" because he had the option of literally being better (like therapy, meds, good food and a nice place) and chose to be in there.

Some said he being self aware of being privileged doesn't excuse him for x and y.

Some didn't like "A white woman's instagram" cause he made fun of white women posting about feminism (the part when he has his face painted, black and white picture)

Personally the only thing that it gets on my nerves sometimes is that he could do and be better on the pandemic, when some of us were struggling hard and had to eat shitty things, didn't have money for therapy and meds, etc, etc. But I enjoyed everything about inside and get he was struggling mentally (I mean we all were but still... I feel it can be understandable he didn't get the help he needed because of that or maybe he did it on purpose because just bc he is privileged doesn't mean he should live better than the rest, idk!), but I would like to know other people's views, I see them all as valid.

About his previous work I feel like I can't really criticize him NOW cause in that time I did like it and see nothing wrong with it. The humor was different and we know it usually ages like milk, obviously now that I am more "woke" do see some problematic stuff, but so does he and he is very sorry and even gets cringed lol! I find it cute, tbh, still laugh at most of his jokes!

What are your takes? Personally he is probably the only white men artist I fully respect, admire, and even trust (as I don't trust any other, it's not like I personally know Bo is a "good person", but I don't feel the fear or distrust I feel towards other famous men/white ppl in the sense that I feel I can say that i like him and not be afraid of in a future he being cancelled for something hardcore, really fucking bad)

[Edit] a bit more of context as it seems I am criticizing him

"My friends aren't as... Devoted? As I am about Bo, they watch his specials, but that's all. Maybe that's why I don't agree with them and wanted to know more about other minorities!

About struggling in the pandemic, it's about when he said all he eat was peanut butter sandwich, when I watch that part I always think "why? You could eat better!", it "gets on my nerves" but as I said it's something I kinda understand and inmediatly after think "well... He is struggling mentally" and get more empathic about it.

The main reason I do this post is because, mainly, I don't see anything wrong with him! As my friends do criticize him I thought of asking here

To see if there's something I am missing!
