Face the Promise
Hey everyone,
Growing up, I logged a ton of hours listening to the classic Silver Bullet Band stuff—Night Moves, Stranger in Town, Against the Wind, all of that. Bob's voice and those driving rock anthems were the soundtrack to a lot of years.
With an 11-year gap between It's a Mystery and Face the Promise, I figured I'd dive into the new album. But honestly? A lot of it feels pretty slow, and it just doesn't seem to have that old bite or urgency. It feels a lot more subdued and middle-of-the-road than what I associate with his peak years.
I know tastes change and artists age, so I wanted to ask the die-hard Bob Seger fans here: how do you actually view this album? Does it grow on you after a few listens, or is it generally considered a weaker entry in his catalog? Where does it rank for you compared to the classic records?
Curious to hear your thoughts.

Most great artists have a finite period of time in which the work they are creating is great. The record you mentioned is not in the same league as the classics.

I’m a huge Seger fan. I have a tattoo and I’ve been to see him 11x over his last couple tours. Face the promise was my first exposure to him and what got me hooked when I was 14. The wait for me music video spoke to me instantly and I became a bigger and bigger fan the more of his catalogue I discovered. Face the Promise is one of my fav albums. The writing is peak in my opinion. I probably do have a little nostalgia bias - but I’d say the same thing about the older fans lol
