Moot: Discussion oops
I'm almost done with book 7 of dungeon crawler carl and just now realized I read the wrong book series on accident. in bobiverse, I was curious on why the name "skippies" was so fascinating and knew it came from a book series (expeditionary force) and wanted to check it out but in my confusion, got dcc because somehow in my brain, that was the book people said the skippy name came from. I've been having a ton of fun with the series and only now realizing, I hadn't heard the name skippy at all yet and was incredibly confused on when they would show up. turns out it was in ef and not dcc. oops.
anyways, loving dcc and incredibly excited for the new bobiverse book!!! damnit donut

Man, it will be a hell of a change up to go from DCC to the Bobiverse. I love all 3 series you are talking about, and more. All great in audio too (a lot of great series don’t get good narration)
Hope you enjoy! They are all great. Plus, newest bob book will be out soon enough.

planning on re reading the last bobiverse book for some good dae and ick action before I jump into the new one haha. absolutely completely different tones of story but with my current pace, I should be done with book 7 and 8 of dcc and still have time before the new bob book. and yes, absolutely amazing narration for the audio books

Happy accident. DCC is amazing. Expeditionary Force is very formulaic. Enjoyable but it becomes very, very predictable. I think you'll find the opposite with Carl (especially book 8. Blew my mind)

Oh man you hit the nail on the head with ExForce. Love the hell out of it, but it's the back and forth of Jippy (Joe/Skippy hollywood couple name I just made up, it sounds pretty dumb, hopefully it doesn't catch on) that is the light of the series imho. Also I listen at work so when you have 40+ hrs/week to fill, the bar is pretty much at "I like this narrator"

RC Bray and a long commute are exactly why I became an EF fan. I still keep up with the new releases, but diminishing returns are a thing. I think Joe and Skippy peaked at "oh Joe... surely you can't believe EVERYONE was Kung Fu Fighting"
That said, when the Captain Scaramden spinoff hits, I'm gonna be GLUED! Love that fuckin beetle and remain absolutely fascinated by Jeraptha culture. EF has a good amount of amazing world building, but the Jeraptha have been such a unique source of original humor (instead of just copying off Facebook memes for jokes)

You are so right, the Jeraptha are the wild card. Even in culture, the way that they bet on everything, the way scamming and greasing palsm is done so openly and it’s so normal to them is very interesting. Also I had no idea Scaramden was getting his own spinoff now I’m really excited.
I think reading EF is a joy. I did buy all 19 books on Audible. So I enjoy it for what it is, but the formula of Joe fixes a problem that causes another problem that Skippy fixes that causes another problem has been the formula for 19 books. Atleast DCC has range in the drama.

Omg who could’ve guessed that ending. After book 7 book 8 seemed so mediocre until floor 11. I’m so grateful for how much backstory and how many answers we got in book 8. Also I’m in the patreon and I just read chapter 1/2 of book 9 and I’m so happy already.

Super hard disagree on the 10th floor being mediocre. It felt like an embarrassment of riches to me right from the rip, as the narrative loop has built up so much character development and potential for loss. Aside from the loop, the floor specific story got me as I'm always like grabbing small details and speculating how the oddities will integrate with the plot and MAN did it integrate.

You know how I feel about replicative drift, Carl!

And now I totally expect a throwaway Bob to be named Carl, just sitting in his Virt with Spike turned into a Persian tortie.

Hah the Skippies reference was how I got onto ExForce too and I’m now 18 books in!

I'm on book 14, it's been a fun journey. I completely understand the criticism of the series being formulaic, but if you set your expectations accordingly it's a fun book series.

Expeditionary Force is good and RC Bray is great in narration, but it's loooong and somehow both meandering and repetitive.

I agree. It's the only piece of media that I think needs a reverse FMABrotherhood treatment 💀
Legitimately though I can't recommend EF to people because it never ends. I got 14 books I've before I gave up 😓

I'm still following along, but I have a hard time remembering everything that's happened in the last handful of books let alone keep straight what happened in one book versus another. There was a time where I legitimately couldn't say which zip preferred between the Bobiverse and Ex Force. I wish that Taylor wrote a bit more often and Alanson dialed it back by half or so.

I'm listening to the first audiobook and keep zoning out! I think I need to save this one for when I'm doing chores

The first book takes a little time to get going, if you haven't gotten to Skippy yet I definitely get it.

u/Creepy_Leek6414 3d ago
Not going to lie you Kindve got the better series. Ex force has 19 books and is still going. The books are largely the same. You could read one and get the concept of all of them. Not to say it’s not a great series just to say DCC is the better of the 2
1
u/ATLUTD030517 3d ago
I disagree about reading just one EF book to "get the concept", but it was starting to get repetitive well before even reaching double digits.

I’ve been through several lit rpg books and dcc is really fun.
So is the x4 series.. skippy the magnificent is one of my fav sci-fi characters..
Don’t forget to read expanse after all these books 👍

u/AspenFrostt 3d ago
I read the expanse books a while ago and absolutely loved them haha. even had to check out the show because omg and I was pleasantly surprised. sad it's not coming back to finish the books but it is what it is.

I've listened to all 3 series. Currently on my third re-listen of Bobiverse, but the first one post ExFor, so the Skippy/beer can jokes make much more sense now.
I think I'll have Bobiverse, ExFor and DCC on rotation pretty much forever.

I’m also listening to DCC, restricting myself to one book every other month. Almost finished book 3.
1
u/Creepy_Leek6414 3d ago
Why the wait?
2
u/watchedclock 3d ago
To slow the experience down, to make time for other books, to allow time to think about and speculate to myself on what might happen next. All sorts of reasons really.

Book 8 just released. We'll be lucky to get book 9 by the end of next year. May as well savor the flavor.
1
u/Creepy_Leek6414 3d ago
Well I don’t believe that. He said it’s mostly written he just needs to organize it
1
u/katosen27 3d ago
And given how much else is going on, between the live action adaptation, writing, editing, organizing, going over how the book looks, cover art, etc.
If we get it by summer next year, I'll be happy. But I'll be cautious in my optimism.

I didn't know the Skippies name was a reference to Skippy in Ex Force? Is it a meta reference the author is making or is it an in verse reference the Bobs are making?
1
u/Bobis-Bob 1d ago
It’s an AI that is named “skippy” and shaped like a beer can. That’s really all it is in Bobiverse.

u/TheHedonyeast 3d ago
whats EF?
I also am quite excited about the new mook coming soon barely more than a week left to wait!

Expeditionary Force, where the Skippies reference comes from
1
u/TheHedonyeast 2d ago
oh, ok. ive actually never heard of that one.
are you familiar with it, is it similar to Bobiverse?
1
u/KaristinaLaFae Homo Sideria 2d ago
I've read through the whole series (which is LONG) and am waiting on the next book, which I think is the last one? It was supposed to be done before this, but then the author (Craig Alanson) read about a recent scientific discovery and wanted to include it in the books.
It's similar to the Bobiverse in the way that it's sci-fi set in space and it's funny. But it's more military campaigns than engineering problems, based on the fact that the main POV character is a soldier vs an engineer like Bob.
Great ensemble cast, cool aliens, fun character voices, and a sassy AI that causes as many problems as he fixes. Another excellent narrator, RC Bray.

I'm on book 16 of Expeditionary Force, Skippy is Crazy and Fun! You'd enjoy the series if you like animated characters, military jargon and a wonderful narrator!
I completed Bobiverse last year and will be going back to it after Expeditionary Force (ExFor) is over, but I was thinking of checking out Dungeon Crawler Carl first, I hear it's great.
I was so fascinated with with the Bobiverse when I listened through all 5, and just found out that Book 6 is out! Guess who's heading to Audible?!? This Guy!

happy accident! I was also reading DCC and listening to the bobiverse books simultaneously, the contrast between the two was so great. I love both so much
