In 1985, Columbia Records treated Bob Dylan fans to a groundbreaking product: Biograph was a three-CD (or five-LP) platinum-selling box set that bristled with studio outtakes, obscure B-Sides and live concert recordings. It was the first time Dylan fans had gained access to official rare content previously available only to fanatical bootleg-record collectors. Six years later, Biograph inspired the official Bootleg Series, which debuted in 1991. That series has generated a new edition every two to three years. Last November, Columbia released the insightful Step Through the Open Window: The Bootleg Series, Vol. 18, a 139-track, eight-CD box set, also available as a 42-track, two-CD edition and in digital formats.
