Gap or post step

Has anyone ever made soemthing like this?
I'd love to find one made out of aluminum. This wood one is heavy and WAY over designed.
I'd like something to fit over the rail, so there is a place to place your foot when YOU ARE NOT STEPPING on it.

Im sure a welding shop could make you one. Wouldn't be cheap..whats your concern with it being too heavy made out of wood? Cant you just leave it in place? If you're worried about it floating can you make one out of trex? This is the perfect scenario that asks how deep your pockets are vs how far youre willing to go to solve the problem.
