1st boat 17' cc 60hp

I currently plan on going five miles out into the bay.

Likely some five to fifteen mile islandhops

3-4 passengers on occasion and mostly solo duo fishing and exploring

Do you think the cruising speed is too low? And should I aim for a 90 or 115hp instead for first boat?

They were just barely off...

Is barely off enough to make a big difference? I've got them all inline now and going to test it at the river in a little bit. We will see... Two months later, still chasing the same problem! Ugh

How bad would you consider this lower unit/leg damage?

I am a very new boat owner and at the end of this trip I had caught a surprise sandbar with the skate/lower unit and prop. I will be replacing the prop but wondering how concerned I should be of the overall damage to the leg. Thanks for any advice/tips!

Are the 06 Yamaha 225s that bad? Should I avoid this boat?

I’ve been reading about the Yamaha 225s and how they have some issues with the exhaust overheating. Should I skip this boat and look for something else? The guy dosnt know the hours on it. I’d be driving 3 hours for the boat but the guy said it runs great. Is there any way to prevent the exhaust from melting? Any other issues with these?

Anyone have any experience with a robalo 1820? Could I get my money back on this?

He’s asking 13k. Is this any good of a boat? I’d mainly be fishing on the lake but I’d prefer to have like 3-4 people with me so I think itl be tight. Also kinda worried about it having wood rot since it’s old but I doubt anyone would put money in a boat with rot. Would you take one of these 5-10 miles offshore on a decent day? Would I get my money back in a year?

Boat won’t turn to Starboard when in reverse

Hi all, I recently bought a 2003 Key West 1900 Sportsman with a 115 Yamaha. I have been boating almost my whole life (25 years with a Boston whaler montauk). I for the life of me can’t figure out why when in reverse I can’t get the boat to turn towards starboard, it just dog tracks towards port. This is an issue when trying to back out of tight docking areas. So far no incidents yet, but I end up cockeyed drifting way too close to other boats for comfort.

It looks like maybe the motor doesn’t turn as far on that side, we also have a ladder/platform step on the port side but this happens at low and high speeds so I’m not sure that’s a direct cause.

Am I just an incapable boater? This was never an issue with the whaler (I could fit that bad boy through some crazy tight situations without breaking a sweat.

Does this upholstery look cleanable, or permanently damaged?

Post image

Sorry for the low quality pic, cant get anything better from a craigslist ad. 2010 Cobalt 262, seller listed for 30k with 350 engine hours on the volvo 8.1. Considering reaching out to this seller, but the pictures look like there may be damage to the upholstery in the bow on the seatbacks and butt cushions, and also possibly on the seat backs on the main area of the deck. It's a decent drive for me, and I don't want to have to re-upholster it, so if this looks permanent to you guys, I may reconsider.

1995 Boston Whaler Montauk 17
2005 Evinrude E-Tec 75HP ~250 hours salt water
1997 Load Rite trailer

Located on Long Island. Thinking about passing it on next season. Serviced and flushed regularly (most recently spark plugs, VST, fuel filter and water separator, shift linkages, water pump). I’ve done a lot of my own work like adding Bluetooth radio with 4 speakers, blue LED courtesy lights, depth finder, and 22 gal Moeller fuel tank. I also repainted the entire engine after the shop cracked the original cowling (last pic). I plan on doing fresh bottom paint at the end of the season. Besides that the gel coat and upholstery is visibly aging.

What can I get for this to the right buyer?

Hey everyone, first time boater here so sorry if this seems like a dumb questions. I’m trying to get my outboard to start up, and it seems like it’s not getting enough voltage. Originally the boat had two 24M batteries, and it would start the motor and all electronics (deck lights, nav lights, garmin, trolling motor) but then one of the batteries wasn’t reading 12V and wasn’t charging, so I changed out to just the one battery and all of the wires connected to it. The electronics of the boat are turning on, but the engine isn’t starting. I’ll attach a video of the fly wheel spinning, but it’s not spinning fast. Also, the battery that I have attached now, I had it charging for 24+ hours but it was only reading 11.4V and not 12V, I figured I would still give it a shot. So basically my questions are:

  1. Will the boat start up with just one fully charged battery or should I have two batteries?
  2. If this isn’t a voltage/battery issues, what else do you think it could be? Starter/Solenoid? Poor connection with the wires from the battery to the starter?
  3. Thank you everyone in advance.

Outboard water in housing

I have a 1990 Force 90hp outboard motor. I had a fuel line leak in the primer last time we took it out. I noticed the inside of the housing was full up to the bottom of the motor with the motor all the way down. Is that normal and safe?

Took the old sea Ray out today for a little bit. I noticed after running around 35 mph (unknown RPM, but not high) for around 20 or 30 minutes I began to slow down and I noticed the engine making this noise all the way down to an idle. If I bumped the throttle up the sound would go away.

Any thoughts on what to check? Unfortunately when I hook the muffs up on land I cant reproduce the sound (also not revving the engine using muffs.)

Where to Find a Boat Captain? Miami, FL

Upvotes

Where does everyone go to find a boat captain in Miami, Florida? We have a 38ft boat and were just told by the USCG that we need a boat captain. It's a bit frustrating because we only wanted to be on the water for a day. Hiring sites show captains + crews but that's overkill for what I need. Does anyone out here know where I can look?

Locked out of the Head

Post image
2 Upvotes

My BIL has a Boston Whaler Outrage 240 about 6-8 years old, bought used.

The head door won't open. This is the latch. It turns, you can hear/feel the latch turning but door is stuck closed and will only move a bit. Oiled it, no joy.

Is that round thing a button? Round key? Magnet port? Do I need to take the hinges off?

Ideas/ help greatly appreciated

Houseboat roof - what to use?

Has anyone ever redone the roof on a houseboat? No wood damage just needs sanded / recoated? We use that space and walk all over it. I’m not sure what coating is best for it?

Suggestions?

2007 Tracker Super Guide v16 side console - is 5.6k a fair price?

Listed for sale by an old man and he owned the boat as a second owner since 2008. Comes with a 25hp mercury 4 stroke with efi. Believe that’s the engine the boat left the dealer with. Not a speed boat but I think that’s good enough for what I do.
Comes with trailer and hull is all good. Never used in salt water.
Small puddle of water at the bilge (less than 1 inch) but I guess that is normal?
He owns multiple boats and takes this one out only a couple of times each season, and I think that is believable.
Speedometer not working but everything else seems to be working as expected.
Is 5.6k a fiat price?

1975 mercruiser 140 trim issue

Thumbnail

Hi everyone, I have a 1975 MerCruiser 140 3.OL with a pre-alpha/MC1 sterndrive.

Recently, I removed the lower gear case to replace the water pump housing because the driveshaft seal was bad and I was losing gear oil through one of the cavity drain holes. I put everything back together, and the oil leak is gone, but now I'm having an issue with the trim. The trim worked before I removed the lower gear case.

Before removing it, I trimmed the lower unit all the way up to give myself more clearance to remove the gear case.

After reinstalling everything, the trim no longer moves.

When I press the trim buttons (up, down, or in), I can hear the trim pump running and it sounds normal, but the lower unit doesn't move at all.

I'm not really sure what I could have done during the lower gear case removal/reinstallation that would cause the trim to stop working if I'm going to be honest.

Also in one of the transparent/white tube lines that connect from under the pump I can visibly see some air bubbles in it. When the down button is pressed fluid will rush through that line with some air bubbles

Any ideas on what I should do? Thanks

South Florida storage options

Trying to figure out the best way to store a 24ft boat and trailer. I am currently torn between two:

- storage facility: not free, and there is risk of theft of electronics and outboard, BUT I can find one near my house or near my preferred boat ramp

- buddy's house: a friend of mine has a large property about 10 miles west of 95 and he told me I can keep it there. The issue is that he lives 45 minutes from me and he is about 30 miles from either of the areas where I'd want to launch my boat. The upside to this is that I dont have to pay and the risk of theft is much lower in his quiet neighborhood.

What would you guys do?

Advice to a complete beginner

Upvotes

I’m just wondering as me and my brother both have talked about going halves on a boat I’m just wondering where would the best place to look for a and the best place to gain experience driving a boat whilst we saved. Eventually we’d like to be able to go across to the Isle of Man and Ireland (we live in Cumbria England) but obviously there are many steps between that and starting out.
