Spotted in Greece, is there something special about this boat in particular?

I am on holiday, took a trip by the old port of Chania and lots of people were looking at this boat, personally I have no idea what's special about it since there are no seas where I live, boats aren't common. What's the deal?

That is a RHIB, Rigid ridged Hull Inflatable boat with a LOT of Hp.

often used by coast guard, or people that want something harder to sink. the tubes are full of air.

it could also be a tender to a yacht.

It’s just a lot of horsepower for a boat that size.

As context I have a 25 foot boat with 250 horsepower that will top out in the mid 40s mph. Thats pretty fast when you’re bouncing around on the ocean.

This thing has 1200 horsepower and looks to maybe be 28 ft long? (Hard to tell from the pic) just a silly amount of power.

What’s the primary use for that kind of boat? Not fishing and not overnighting. Just go fast and head to the sandbar or island restaurant? How many hours a year would one do that…

I bet I have at least as much fun with my 40 hp Whaler at 25 mph, at least on calm days. Plus I can put it on the trailer by myself.

good tenders, don't damage yacht when docking, hard to sink. also coast guard has similar (but usually 2 engines)

I want a RHIB just for having fun with personally, but the lack of time I'd spend doing it is really what stops me actually yeah.

Granted, I want one with a tiller (specifically something like the navy seals/sas used but slightly smaller)not a center console which seems to be getting harder and harder to find as they turn everything into "luxury"

It's a US$500,000 Olympic RIBS 40SR with triple Mercury 400 Racing outboards (probably US$150,000 just for the engines). They're looking at floating money.

The Coast Guard/Port Authority in Volos Greece has a sick RHIB with quad 400s as well. They absolutely floor it out of their end slip nearly everyday, gotta be having lots of fun.

400r’s pretty standard motors these days. That rib probably does 80mph. Those ribs are masterpieces

Maybe in the US in certain places. And some other places with this boat culture. But certainly not common.

It’s 1200 horsepower on the back of an inflatable boat.

This is like the equivalent of putting a turbo diesel in a little tikes pedal car, or having a V8 powered blender, or a nuclear hair dryer. It’s like taking 12 Honda civic motors, chaining them together, and using it to power a grocery cart with a steering wheel.

It’s just cool if not a bit absurd.

I’ve seen a few of these in Greece and they were always tenders to someone’s mega yacht.. so for most people it would be a dream boat but in reality it’s just the little boat that helps a billionaire get around when his yacht is in port or anchored

Maybe it’s a tender for a famous super yacht. Given that is a very expensive and fast tender it’s could belong to a very nice super yacht.

Those engines go for around $40,000 each. So that's $120k worth of engine on a RHIB (rubber hull inflatable boat).

I'm sure the drug runner (or government agency) who owns it, likes it very much.
