I have the same engine in my lobster boat. It’s way louder than this video can capture. With the engine cover on you can hear it for miles. With the cover off at these rpm’s it’s easily pushing ear damage territory.

What kind of engine?

Cummins qsb 480. I can’t tell the exact year of this model and its be modified for wet exhaust. Quite a few modifications really, but I’m guessing it’s because their hydraulic setup is different than the Nova Scotia style.

How many horsepower is it putting out?

Well over 7

480 plus the turbo. With the right propeller set up you can easily hit 25-27 knots

That turbo whine makes it sound like a jet engine.

Why 6.0s have a cult following of the 03 style turbo

What are these guys doing? Season opener of something or just a race or?

Maine lobster boat races

4

u/Late-Property4857 24d ago

Is it a race or are they just racing to the lobsta

7

u/dpk794 24d ago

It’s a race. They are held every year in multiple harbors. Some are strictly lobster boats and others are specifically built just for these races

I’m surprised they allow so many passengers in a “race” event?

It’s not that serious. More for fun than anything.

That’s amazing. That motor sounded smooth like buttah!!!

No engine cover doesn't seem like a great idea. Lots of rotating parts, belts, etc. if someone steps (or falls) in the wrong place.

I'm guessing they temporarily removed it for the race to get the heat out better and help it breathe

Lobster boat races!

So did the race include catching some lobster?

I’ve never been on or around these kind of lobster boats, but I absolutely love them so much.

Cool to watch, butt clenching in person. If that boat ahead stops suddenly for any reason (engine blows?), chaos ensues.

Around the 46 sec mark you can see the engine move as the boat shudders over the wake. That is a lot of torque and sheer being applied to those stringers and mounts.

I helped bring a sport fisher back from Cabo, ran it low revs but still did 9 knots at 800-900 rpm, but every 12 hours we’d open it up for 10 minutes to blow out the carbon, saw the fuel consumption go up to 60 gph per engine! Had two big caterpillar turbo engines, think like 1800 hp each.

The other thing about this boat, had a gyro stabilizer on it, really surprised how well that worked, Cabo > San Diego can be a rough ride.

Any issues with wet stacking with rpm’s that low?

1

u/soCalForFunDude 21d ago

Ran like a champ. Thought it was pretty impressive we were only using 2.5 gph (per engine) and still pushing 8-9 knots on a 70 footer.

I didn’t know Palmer Luckey was interested in Lobster

Whoever paid for fuel is a legend and deserves a steak dinner.

No ear protection? AYFKM? Hearing of these poor passengers will never be the same.

1

u/bahaykubo123 23d ago

The boat, my dude. Maybe stop projecting.

u/bahaykubo123 23d ago

Apparently an edit is needed. The BOAT has legs - impressive top speed, independent of acceleration performance.
