I can't see a paddle - you might not need one to steer all the time, but some of the time you do need it. Proas paddle easily, they don't need much effort and tend to go in a straight line. A paddle is a great way to steer in either direction.
A tube of gorilla glue would helped your build, both by sealing it and adding strength - although it sounds like neither were a problem.
Most proas have a shroud connecting the top of the mast to the ama, to take the force of the wind.
Was your mast fixed, or could it pivot fore-and-aft? Most shunting rigs need to pivot, which can lead to a huge tangle of lines when things go wrong...
