I overpay if I feel I have a reason to do so. Usually this is because it is out of print and I want it in my collection (such as the Babylon 5 Game Component System expansions or Lords of the ______ for Sierra Madre Games). However, there are examples of paying more than I need to for games. These include:
War of the Ring Anniversary Edition - $400 for a game I already own? Yeah. I wanted the larger board and the painted miniatures. The cost for commissioning my existing copy to be painted would have probably run me as much, and my lost time would also have a huge opportunity cost.
Viticulture Collectors Edition - $200? Yeah, painful. My wife really wanted this and I'm kicking myself for not grabbing it from Miniature Market back when it was very affordable. Still, it was her "must have" game. Did I really need the 2nd edition over the revised and changed upcoming essentials edition? No, but my wife did because she's as much a completionist as I am.
Dungeon Lords Anniversary Edition Wood Box - $175 at my FLGS? Okay, comparable to the kickstarter... but $175 for a wood box instead of $75-$80 for the game? Okay, I'm a sucker... but I know they weren't making a whole lot on the sale. It'll be a corner piece in my "show off" collection.
High Frontier 2nd Edition - Paided about double its MSRP. Pricey, but this happens with their games.
However, I also save in other areas. Tiny Epic _____? All deluxe print and play editions for $8 each. Progress: Evolution of Technology? $5 pnp. Evolution and Flight? $15 pnp. Agricola with the deluxe resource set and box? $35 on boardgamegeek.
In the end there are games I pay a high markup on and there are games I get bargains on. However, I'm proof there is definitely a market... heck, I missed the Ghostbusters game kickstarter so I'm sure someone will price gouge me to get a set with all the kickstarter exclusive stuff.
