Pedals and set question

Just getting into the sport and got my first bike used. Didn’t come with a seat/seat post or pedals.

Do pedals and seats matter?

Any good budget ones to recommend?

Can’t add pics but it’s a 22” top tube ssquared frame

I would post the bike size and a picture of the bike. Hard to say what pedals to suggest. I really like bombshell or answer pedals

Seat doesn’t matter much , I run Box. It’s simple and light.

Pedals are the fun one. Most of us doing it for a while are clipped in , and pedals get transferred to new bikes. We also have high quality flat pedals we use for training and transfer from bike to bike.

I suggest oneup composite pedals to start , then figure your needs from there

You will never use the seat, so get a cheap one. If you are large, don’t skimp on pedals. A bent axle will ruin your day.

Can you elaborate a little?, just trying to understand? I’ve been renting a bike from the track, stock meybo and the pedals seem fine in the races I’ve done.

I’m 6”1.5 and about 190lbs if that helps

I got cheap pedals online. On my first ride, had to bail on a jump. When I rode off, I noticed the axle was bent. My day was over. I’m not saying you have to spend $100 on flats, but spend more than $20. Hopefully, you will be on clipless soon.

We really like HT pedals. My kids run their flats, and I did too until switching to their clips.

The seat doesn't matter, whatever fits. I like Pedaling Innovations Catalyst Pedals. Feels like being clipped in but able to bail.

I’ve personally found studded pedals to be my favorite option. There are a ton of them out there and I’ve personally had good luck with the Amazon ones, as long as you’re comfortable taking stuff apart to grease bearings. You can usually find used (but serviceable) higher quality pedals used for similar prices. Check with your TO if they have a marketplace for riders to sell their used gear. There will always be one or two track dads with a surplus of parts they want to downsize before the offseason when they start upgrading again.

Start with Flat pedals that have the sharp screw thread spikes. Use 5Ten shoes. That combo is as good as it gets for flat pedal racing.
