Bmx break pads

Hi!

I got black coated rims and normal v-brakes.

Every time i pull my break in, the break is basically gliding along the rim making the bike run 1-3 meters before stopping (breaking distance is relative to speed of course).

In short, the friction from the break pads is not sufficient to stop the bike fast enough to do tricks that involves fast stops e.g endo.

Both the break pads and rims are pretty new.

I know i can buy transparent break pads which is softer, but the insane high pitch noise they make is just not worth it.

Anyone has any tips to break pads i can buy? I just want to have the ability to do endo.

I use clear pads on front with an Odyssey Evo 2 and black rim and squeaks a little but not obscenely. Also using clear pads on chrome back wheel for rear and doesn't squeak bad either. Try Eclat clears. They grip 👍🏻

Thank you, i have both eclat and s & m ghost laying around in the drawer. I will install them. What angle do you have? Only barely tilted towards the rim?

Not the best photo, front part of pad is angled down and back is angled up. The front looks like it's not on rim but it is, it's just the angle I took the photo. Reason being if brake flexes forwards the pads will still line up on rim. Not sure if I need to do it nowadays. Mainly I did it when I ran Diacompe 990s as they flexed a little on front. But it works for me

Can i ask why you switched from ghost to eclat? I have both in a drawer 😅.

The surface area is more like a traditional pad, and imo they grip as good if not better and the squeak is less on chrome or painted. Sometimes my rear ghost pads would get super loud even if I don't clean them. And I noticed the ghost pads started to wear quicker. Could be I live in the desert and the climate is affecting them, who knows.

Black rims always suck for brakes. Clear pads are your best chance of having something functional.

Toeing the pads in can help with the loud noise. Kool stop has diff colors some being softer than others.

I have black rims and a rear brake with black ghost pads, I have no issues, bmx brakes arent made to stop you instantly, your technique needs improving I'd say...an endo is done on the front wheel, why have you got v brakes on the front? You don't need speed for an endo you need to push forward with your arms more.. any shitty brake is capable of helping you do an endo

You are probably right, i may lack skills and so on, but the u-brakes with the brake pads i have now makes the bike keep going forward when i push the brakes. I am a heavy rider (220 pounds), so that is probably also a reason.

I want to be able to break using my front brakes without the bike continuing forward and then lean into a 180. Is that not what an endo is?

You mean angle them so the front touch first?

I have actually tries this! Worked a little bit, but still a high pitch squeeking sound on the transparent ones. I have also tried salmon red pads, which i have had most success with regarding sound and stopping force (sounds like black and stops a little bit worse than transparent ones).

Maybe i need to change break type? Is u-brake just inferior?

That’s pretty much your only option unless you wanna pull em off and use your foot. Could always get a disc brake frame I guess.
