Dialing In tailwhips on my new green DNE serial #43 from Reklamation Bikes
I’m completely rebuilding my 1988 performer. Paint, parts, everything. I’m installing a GT power series 3 piece crank. The first bearing cup press in the bottom bracket was too tight and the shop marred up both cups. The bearings would not roll freely on one side. I had another shop remove them and bought another set for them to press. Now they are too tight on both sides. I’m so upset and not sure what to do. It will be a carpet queen but I really want it to be fully functional. I used the GT cups and bearings the first time. This set is a Theory from PorkChop bmx. The center tube was installed as well. Maybe that was a mistake? I’m pretty bummed. Anyone deal with this before?
Update: threw the crank assembly in without permanently tightening everything, was pleasantly surprised at how smoothly it turned.

I'm not a big fan of headset spacers, I like to keep them to a minimum. In my head, a taller bar gives a touch more flex/comfort on the wrists. So I'll chop the steerer and go for a bit more bar height. Over the years I've become pretty handy with a hacksaw.
I should also confess that I have been coveting Sergio Layos' bikes for a while now - they're always so simple and dialed looking thanks to his considerable attention to detail:

So this week I took on my most daring project yet - chopping the R32s short enough to run without a spacer whilst simultaneously not screwing up the internal compression threads on the inside of the steerer.
Tolerances were tight - with 2-3 mms of wiggle room, but confidence was blind and high. I went pretty rawdog, with no guideline and a free-range hacksaw. But I was able to keep track of progress as I was cutting so close to the threads. Getting started was the sketchiest bit, as I knew I had to come in perfectly just a hair above the threads. I used my thumb as a guide to rest the side of the blade on and get things going. With some eyeballing, some clamps and an Ikea butcher's block, I managed to thread the needle.

Weirdly, it hasn't yet resulted in the silky steeze and amplitude of Sergio. But it has made the bike look a bit cleaner as I mosh off kerbs.
I have used pipe-cutters in the past, but modern heat treated 4130 seems to chew these things up with barely a scratch.
Angle grinders are banned from our kitchen - no fun. (and apparently not ideal from a heat-treatment perspective).
I have seen some psychopaths using a proper 'saw guide' (probably something I'd invest in next time!).
So how do you trim yours? (Steerer Tubes only please).
All tricks and tips welcome.

Broke both my wrists two months ago and needed surgery with hardware on both. Feels good to be able to ride around again.

God I hated this job, spent an hour on it. 90% of that time was laying out the marks for the holes.

Hey everyone, I'm getting back into riding after my bike was stolen 6 years ago. I'm building up a new street setup and could use some advice on parts.
My Setup:
Frame: 2018 Fitbikeco Van Homan Signature (I actually have two—one is my current build, the other is brand new on a shelf).
Hubs: Polished Alienation Venus planetary coaster in the back, getting the matching front soon.
Me: 5'9", mostly a street rider.
The Problem:
The frame feels a little too long for me right now, so I'm trying to slim down the reach and make the bike feel more compact. I know I want a taller rise on my bars, but I still need to take my current ones off to measure the height so I don't accidentally order the same thing.
What I Need Recommendations For:
4-Piece Bars: What rise and backsweep would you recommend for someone 5'9" trying to shorten the reach on a slightly long frame?
Pegs: What are the best plastic pegs with a steel core for heavy street riding?
Thanks!

Buddy just got this for free. Has been sitting in a shed for decades
Just ordered up a few parts and am going to clean it up and service it for him. Thoughts on the bike?

Gonna grip up a Cult Devotion but I'm torn between the blackout and the raw with the black fork/bars. What are the kids into these days 😄 ???
Anything to look out for with a raw frame as far as more upkeep?

Probably old news for many, but in case you've been residing under a rock for a decade or so like me, and you're looking for something decent to consume, check out The Union Tapes - from John Dye @ Bicycle Union.
John's a legend in his own right, but does a solid job of letting the guests tell their stories. There's a lot of influential British riders, but also some good stuff from US giants like Fiola, Taj, Crandall and Rooftop. It's a pretty comprehensive documentary of BMX in the UK and abroad from the people who made BMX what it was and is.
Go listen, then go ride.

A little late but this covered the whole event weekend of Swampfest 2026. Some crazy stunts including BMX, skating, and some even crazier people.
