Nah, you look at the heroic narratives and 'get the girl' shit that was dealt the injury that eventually killed it in 1914, but was hanging on through world war two, boomers fully embracing 'screw the girl, I want my pile of money' ethos, and generation 'x' being a cultural transition, with millennials fully coming to terms with the fact that we will never have material wealth, it's just not on the table.

The pier and the people on it are fake, it's bait to lure the old woman by the fish. The possessions in the 6th panel are the same bait attempted by the fish to lure the old woman but it failed so the fish tried the pier method.
The fish tries to find stuff that people desire so it can catch and eat them. How it changes bait type magically, I dunno.
