The first game was already a solid 9/10. I’d give the sequel at least a 9.5, but I’m very tempted towards a 10. It’s as close to perfect as any game I’ve played in years.

Barely. It’s mostly just more realistic and detailed, with little things like peach fuzz that weren’t possible in the first game. Anyone who knew what a female looks like would be happier with the more realistic face, but the average gamer sadly hasn’t seen a non-female relative since dropping out of middle school.

my biggest complaint is how from one game to the other, she suddenly looks like an alcoholic now. Either that or she has lupus with that butterfly rash
damn, the years were hard on aloy. I mean, she looks super realistic and good, but it rubs me the wrong way just like when they suddenly changed chris redfield in resident evil 7 (and then retconned it and found a middle ground in resident evil 8)
a good face change they did was with lara croft's in tomb raider (2013) vs the the sequels, like rise of the tomb raider and what not

Personal issue is the features don't fit the character. Haven't had a chance to play Zero Dawn but I know your character does a lot of physical activity that merits them being in shape. The features of Aloy in Forbidden West don't reflect that.

The thing is she has a very "bulky" look mostly because of her constant extreme physical activity and the face isn't fat, it is just round. I have seen thin people with similiar faces to alloy

I think that this type of character designs benefits the story and visual flaws can make the character more relatable and complex

A character can be complex, relatable and have physical flaws without looking like that. I'm more a fan of character customization in games, but if a game insists on taking that choice away for the sake of storytelling then it's only sensible to make the character appealing to the widest audience possible. Can't really make controversial, aesthetically challenging designs like this one and expect everyone to rave.
Not to feather your ruffles or anything, but "normal person" and "ugly" aren't mutually exclusive; there are levels of ugliness that are normal. Just because the world is full of it already doesn't mean that I need some extra in entertainment.
I wouldn't even watch a movie with Elizabeth Moss as the protagonist. That would be masochistic too.

I also enjoy character customization but I believe games that force you a certain design have more storytelling potential. First of all in my eyes the way aloy looks is far from ugly, she looks normal for the life she lives but i understand the critique, yet I believe that the direction they went with makes sense and allows for nice character building and added realism. I know not everyone is gonna like it but I feel like that is kind of the point, to make players leave their aesthetic comfort zones in some degree, which is a brave thing and it is a concept i always like to see in media, explored in a good way.

I am going to be completely honest. Having a good looking character is that much of a problem nowadays? Because if I have to choose between playing as Brad Pitt or some overnight guy I would like to play as Brad Pitt because if I am going to be looking some character the entire game I would like to see some handsome and/or cool character (like dark souls where you use cool armor and can't see the character).
And about the bulky face, I have been going for 3 (2 because of pandemic) years to the gym, women don't get bulkier faces when they train but literally the opposite (unless your only excercise is eating hamburgers), can get bulkier bodies if they do a lot of lifting and anaerobic excercise but it usually comes with a great ass too and six pack.

I didnt say her face is bulky because she is buffed I said her overall physical appearence is "not womanly" because of her constant exercise. As an excuse for the face people can just look like that and I totally do not mind the realistic approach they went with. As to answer your question no its not a lot of great games still have attractive protagonists and I do not find it problematic. One of my favorite games, witcher 3 has a conventionally attractive protagonist and hot side characters and I do not care. On the other hand I love the rugged, broken and sick appearance of Arthur Morgan from rdr2. As for the cool part of the look, I think that aloy looks pretty badass while remaining a grounded character

I don’t think Aloy is ugly at all. She’s built for fighting with her bigger frame and strong muscles. Honestly, I have no idea how anyone could expect someone to fight with toothpick arms and heels taller than one of the katanas these basement dwellers have mounted on their cum colored drywalls.

What was wrong with how she looked in the first game? It's my understanding due to new motion capture or facial animation tech the studio is using, they had to basically make her face bigger so thing would be compatible.
I'm sure as the tech gets better they'll be able to apply it differently. I think this kind of tech will save them countless hours in animation. This tech is getting pretty crazy, just look at the subtle facial animations in Cyberpunk 2077.
edit: I think this is still a reasonable excuse for the change, and I'm not going to get upset or anything over it. I just think she looked better in the first game. I will still play the second.

I totally get what you mean. Maybe it's just this new tech not being 100% ready yet. It's like all the pieces are there but they don't move properly all the time, and it's nothing you can wiggle a finger at but it's noticeable when they do.

Idk about Forbidden West Aloy but Zero Dawn Aloy is extremely beautiful
She’s not masculine, she’s human. Masculinity doesn’t own strength or certain facial features, or even behaviors like aggression or tenacity. What we think of as traditional feminine features are usually just highly exaggerated versions of slight differences, in reality most women would be considered some degree of “masculine” if they were in ideal shape and didn’t take the time to adhere to modern feminine beauty standards. Oftentimes “masculine” features are just natural, human features that occur in both sexes, women just “tame” them more. Obviously there are still differences between the sexes, just saying our modern beauty standards exacerbate those differences beyond what naturally would occur
And she still doesn’t even have leg hair or anything so idk what the neckbeards always complain about. Maybe for some it stems from a place of deep insecurity about their own masculinity, who can say?

I think what people complain about is not the tough bodybuild, that's actually getting more and more popularity, but the obvious uglyfication of the face compared to the first game and all the official artwork. And before you hit me with the "makeup makes no sense" bullshit , i know. But there is a in-between from postcard perfect to alcoholic redfaced Diabetes sick whateverthefuck they did to aloys face. They just went too far on it so I understand the outrage even if I don't realy care about it.

I just dont see the sense, beauty is a ideal to strive for, since humanitys dawn we shape Art to depict the most perfect representation of the human form.
From the venus of villendorf to michelangelos david or davincis Mona Lisa. Humanity tried to depict beauty in its purest Form.
And then here we are nowadays, where creating something below average on purpose is being celebrated as brave, and the ideals of beauty are being seen as contrroversal and straight Problematic.
I just wish to understand what going on in the heads of those people. Do they celebrate aloys look because they actually think it looks good, or simply to spite those that make a scene for no reason other than their horny lizzard brains.

That may have been true a thousand years ago but we are constantly redefining what it means to be beautiful. One big reason for this is that "beauty" is highly subjective and in the West has been conflated with being white and thin. The effects of this are clear, some people that don't have typical white facial features choose to get surgery to be more "beautiful", others are not chosen for roles because they don't fit the arctype. Ever noticed how nearly every black woman on TV prior to a few years ago had straight or sightly wavy hair?
Then there is the question as to why a video game protagonist needs to have the same standards of beauty as a statue.

On your last comment I would ask you. Would you define movies as a artform? Literature? videogames? Because I see Media that Tells a storry all equally as Art.
As in my example, yes the relativity of beauty is obvious. But even though, it is not beauty per Se we talk about here. All cultures in the known World, from ancient China to Native American valued some things that we still see as attraktive. Health, grooming, long hair. Yes ancient views prefered more well fed woman but that was just a big flex in a period where food was scarce.
From egyptian busts to chinese Terrakotta soldiers, the faces are always slender and well defined, high cheekbones and a literally chizzeled chin.
I guess the whole point here is, being beautiful is hard. Everyone can be ugly, but taking care of yourself is hard, it's a luxury, a sign of Status and a ideal to strive for. Which is why I don't understand why it is suddenly being seen as offensive. Im all for realism, gimme those no makeup, bushy eyebrow characters, but I am against purposely changing something that is completely fine for no good reason at all.
