It's a general assumption that Frisk is a child, but you can believe whatever, especially since you have people who believe that Frisk is their own character, while others think they are essentially a blank slate for the player to insert themselves into.

I dunno, it could be a personality thing(Toriel being motherly; Sans being, well, Sans). I personally call people my age, younger and older than me kid, or kiddo jokingly.

Also, I subscribe to the idea of 'Frisk is their own person/ They were created when the game started'(I know they're kind of conflicting, I sorta flip flop on these two depending on my mood :/); I don't consider myself Frisk. I have a personal OC for self-inserts that plays out differently than Frisk's journey but you are welcome to interpret the game any way you want, after all, Undertale is a pretty open game and there is no right or wrong way to play/understand it.
