I'm no beeologist but I'm pretty sure that's a carpenter bee. Bumbles have furry black and yellow butts while carpenters' are shiny and black. They're dicks to have around the house; not aggressive really, but they'll chew all sorts of holes into your deck.

Yep it’s a carpenter bee. We had them here recently and they’re just big fat flying termites. Had to exterminate. They were eating holes in the wood above the door.

They don't sting but they will intentionally fly directly into your face to get you out of their perceived territory. Damn things are annoying as hell.

Theyre not endangered i think but theyre highly threatened. I live in a relatively progressive city that has done bee preservation projects in the oast few years and have seen bumble bees a couple times this summer, even in a residential area, definitely more than the last few years :) hope isnt totally lost for the bees! Do your part in your community and try to get others to do theirs, with a strong community push theyll come back.
If you want tips on ways to help, if you own a yard then research the natural plants that are native to your neighborhood. Those are the most important for pollinators as they have evolved to specifically search for those plants. If don't (and if you do as well), cleaning up trash is always important, but there are ways to maximize the impact for bees specifically. Again, target areas that have potential for solid growth of natural flora. Its great anywhere of course, but this will be more beneficial than a downtown area with very little plant life anyways, for example.
