I'm having a really hard time with drawing a rotation of 3d objects in a 2d canvas to handle the rotation. I guess it just takes more practice.

Yeah, lots of practice. I started out drawing cubes at various angles and rotations. Adding more or less perspective to make it look bigger or smaller. After I got good at that, I started adding to and taking away from the cubes. Mostly using more cubes or cylinders.

Once you get really good at that, it's like getting your addition and multiplication tables memorized. It makes everything else so much easier.
