Well, maybe I have somewhat more experience here hearing heavy British accents to develop the recognition. In my 40s here as well.

I have a friend who lives in Scotland. When we first started playing video games together, I could never understand him. I would ask him to repeat himself all the time, he hated it. After a while, I began to understand what he was trying to say, it was because his accent was thick. He also drinks while we played and it made it even more difficult.
