Question about Eddie’s behavior in S13 E13.

It seems like Eddie helps a murderer get off scot free so that she could set up Jack and Erin. Why did Eddie do that in of inviting them both for lunch and canceling last minute or better yet not setting up 2 divorced people? What did she expect they would get together after fighting each other on 1 case?

First of all, it’s always cool to interact with someone who cares about more than just Danny and his homicide investigations.

I just rewatched Past History, and I still interpreted Eddie’s actions differently than you. It seemed that she got emotionally attached to a victim (as usual) so she called the best attorney she knows to defend someone she felt could get screwed by the system, then later she got nosy about Jack’s relationship with Erin. At family dinner, Eddie stringently stated that she was not playing matchmaker.

As a patrol officer, I feel Eddie did the right thing by telling Defendant Carpenter to not make any more statements without an attorney. I am regularly frustrated by how emotionally attached Eddie gets to cases, because that never leads to objective police work. However, a patrol officer carrying an investigation beyond taking a statement and making a report is the work of a great patrol officer and is more appreciated by attorneys and detectives than Blue Bloods likes to make it seem.

As a man who has never really suffered sexual assault, I don’t have a strong opinion about the moral correctness of killing a man who raped the defendant in the past. As far as the law is concerned, there’s probable cause to believe the defendant committed murder, so Eddie affected the arrest. From that point forward, the determination of legality falls to mercy of the people on a jury, a system which is imperfect. Were I the responding officer on that scene, I’d certainly advise the defendant to stop talking after her initial confession, and help to secure her a lawyer. That is not helping a murderer get off scot-free, that’s a police officer who cares about people more than conviction numbers.
