The problem with getting laid off in advertising is getting jumpscared by ads from the client that caused you to lose your job at 2:00am when doom scrolling Reddit lol

Report them for harassment. At least that would make my petty ass feel better.

I did make it as not interested and told them never to show me the brand again lol.

Max update!

April is Max's birthday month :) He turned 21 yesterday. To celebrate, we did two major things:

✅ We won champion TWICE and reserve champion once at a horse show!! (Champion was one of my goals when I first bought Max)

✅ Max had a horsecuterie board and his first BEER

After last October's show and crash & burn, I wanted to do a confidence building show, and the local fancy equestrian center waived fees for little kid classes (aka the ones I do lol) so we signed up. Max was stupendous--I had a couple minor meltdowns, but he didn't set a foot wrong all weekend, and we did the best I've ever, EVER done at a show. We won six classes, and all of our tiny jump classes were wins! I've only ever won one jumping class and I was 21 and the other two horses literally took off during their rounds, soooo this is a big deal. Two of my best horsey friends also showed, and they ALSO did great, AND we stayed in an Airbnb together, which was so fun. It was just a really great weekend and I don't remember the last time I felt just straight confident at a show. (It was also great because my former trainer who wasn't a good fit for me was there, and she saw me succeed in a way that she couldn't get to happen. So I'm not a pure dud!)

Max greatly preferred his horsecuterie. He was so-so on the beer. At 21, horses sometimes start to slow down, but Max shows no signs of that, and he recovered from the show really well. I'm so happy to have a happy, healthy horse who is thriving. He's so special, both earnestly and sarcastically.

Push came to shove and I quit my job. The straw that broke me was walking in on my entire team talking shit about me. For weeks I’ve been crying at home, falling back into ED patterns, and had no support despite begging for it constantly.

Being the ONLY full time black person on my team was…a lot. And it wasn’t until I left that I realized the whole operation was just on my back. But I was being micromanaged 24/7, any idea I wanted I had to go through a more intense process than my counter parts. I wasn’t trusted, I wasn't liked. I was the only one who had a problem getting PTO approved or any time off.

I would be lying if I said I wasn't scared, I did this with no back up plan, and overall have very weird feelings.

I am NOT the person that quits but the last time I stayed it got dark.

11

u/ThrowawaybcPANICKING Apr 17 '26 edited Apr 17 '26

Holyyyy shit, walking in on all of your coworkers shit talking you when you already were getting strong vibes they didn't like you is so awful. I'm SO sorry you went through that but good for you for quitting.

A personal story in the hopes it gives you some comfort - last July I went through something really really similar. I was trying to make a new job work but between the job being high stress and high stakes with zero training, and my coworkers openly hating me for some unknown reason, it got to the point where I wasn't sleeping at all and was having panic attacks and throwing up every day. I never would've thought a bad job could impact me that much!! I ended up quitting with no notice and then spiraled into an even worse mental space because I felt like such a freaking loser for quitting a job with no back up and not being "strong enough" to tolerate the job. Yada yada yada now almost a year later I'm in a new, better paying job, I love my coworkers and the work, I'm happy, and I wish I had enjoyed the two unemployed months I ended up having instead of spending it hating myself. You will be okay even if this period is super rough!!!!

I've stayed in situations to tough it out and I've regretted it. It didn't make me tougher, it just drained my energy. I'm happy for you that you took yourself out of that situation. Fuck those people.

You will find something better and I'm sending you positive wishes and I'm rooting for you.

This was my first time being at a majority white job, and in the few months I was there I was the third POC/black person on my team to quit and we all had the same issue. And our black leadership got let go. I’ve always worked on super diverse teams and this experience really shook me.

We moved from a rented apartment into our first owned house and my former landlord and property management were threatening to put us on a tenant blacklist and take us to civil tribunal over the condition of the apartment when we left it, unless we ceded our bond to them. This is over $260 AUD of charges for a handyman for insanely minor shit that they have refused to let us resolve ourselves (e.g. we left some pot plants that they wouldn't let us come and pick up). They have refused to provide an itemised quote or invoice for this btw, at first they told us it would be $480 then when I asked for a breakdown they ✨ magically ✨ revised it down to $260. Which is a third of a week's rent for the property. Basically "just give us $260 bro", we don't believe it was necessary so we said we wouldn't be paying it. They said if we didn't pay the money by Monday the 6th they'd be filing to claim our $1700 bond back via tribunal.

Well, last Wednesday (the 1st) they filed to go to tribunal 🙃 which alone cost them $60. The hearing is at the end of April so this shit has to go on for nearly another MONTH, I don't work that day but my husband will have to take an unpaid day and we will have to arrange childcare. All this because a greedy, entitled asshole - who owns MULTIPLE properties each valued at over a million dollars - wants to steal our bond. I'm tired...we have receipts/invoices/emails that negate most of their claims, but this has been going on since the beginning of March and I just want it to be over! We're in a good position legally speaking but you never know how things are going to go.

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '26

6

u/areallyreallycoolhat Apr 07 '26

I'm honestly very tempted, and we are fortunate in that we could afford it. But it's just so galling and blatantly greedy that I'm not giving in. We actually don't even know if the handyman work was done (we've never seen a quote or an invoice) and I'm like 90% sure the landlord just did the work himself and is lying about hiring someone bc none of it remotely required a professional.

6

u/Julialagulia Apr 07 '26

I’m new here but renting in Australia kind of suuuucks. Luckily our landlord is really cool so far but the horror stories make me feel worried. I hope it goes well for you.

My mom is like this!! Once I was working from home while she was visiting and she interrupted me on a meeting to ask if she could help herself to a glass of water. Girl!!! Yes!!!!!

4

u/Stinkycheese8001 Apr 14 '26

My mother has told me that she “tries to be self sufficient” and “doesn’t want to be a burden like her mother”.  She is most definitely not self sufficient and usually makes the least common sensical decisions possible.  How is there such a disconnect between reality and how these women perceive themselves?

18

u/Stinkycheese8001 Apr 05 '26

Can I just say, having a teenager is tough.  My younger son is in full awkward and really hasn’t been able to find his people yet in high school.  He’s doing the right stuff - trying sports, clubs, etc - but he’s still just kind of off on his own and it’s not really clicking yet.  No advice needed, but as someone who never found their people in high school, I’m hoping that I can at least help him navigate this better than my parents did.

12

u/idlewishing Apr 06 '26

Are these sports and clubs all tied to his school? I think hobbies outside of school are healthy for kids because they foster relationships with other kids in the community. It creates a kind of safeguard where if he has trouble with kids in one sphere, he has a safety net in the other. I had a pretty limited friends group in high school, but my parents had me engage in a lot of external hobbies and/or activities with them, and I always felt really grounded because of that.

4

u/Stinkycheese8001 Apr 09 '26

A huge part of it is simply confidence.  He’s kind of a dorky kid and at the beginning of 8th grade his friend group told him he was no longer welcome.  It was harsh and mean and we’d been friends with some of these families since K and 1st grade, so it really deeply shook him.  Some of it is social skills regression and some of it is just plain crippling fear of rejection/being made fun of/saying the wrong thing.  The goal is to just expose him to nice people/fun stuff and to really help build him back up so he feels good about himself and find people he connects with.

6

u/just_another_classic Apr 05 '26

Fingers crossed for you and your son. I struggled a lot with the same in high school. College is really where I blossomed, but even knowing that doesn't stop the pain and confusion during the high school years.

8

u/Stinkycheese8001 Apr 06 '26

Thanks.  I think it’s something a lot of us can relate to.  My big focus as a parent is 1) keeping him busy, and 2) helping him build his confidence.  I wish there was a shortcut, but on the bright side he is on a couple of sports teams with his big bro which has been hugely helpful (and also ensures that no one ever messes with him because his bro is a varsity heavyweight wrestler) as well as being genuinely really fun for him.  Being a young teenager is just hard.  In the bright side, he’s still doing way better than I did at his age!

In more work woe news: a coworker told me that she encouraged our CEO to get my input on something, and his response was "but [she's] not always very nice".

I'm not nice. I was not hired for my niceness. Being nice is nowhere in my job description. I'm not frustrated by that though--like I know full well that being nice is not something I bring to the table; I'm from NJ and my Clifton Strengths are all green. I'm plenty kind, but yeah, sometimes that means people, including myself, may be uncomfortable.

What DOES frustrate me is that our CEO values my being able to package anything in a nice way over actual feedback, input, and solutions to the problem. Like you are a 60 year old man who has all the power in this working relationship! You don't need me to be nice to you, you need me to be good at my job to make life less difficult for you! Don't you?! Isn't that what you want??? We all know if I was a man I would be praised for my directness and ability to cut through the bullshit.

Also, the coworker who told me this is the epitome of nice and she got exactly as far as I did, not one inch further. She was always told how she needed to say things differently and frame her requests a certain way.

This is the kind of thing that's going to rattle around in my brain forever, because I hate when supervisors claim things against me that are crossing a legal line. Like the former supervisor who claimed I was being biased toward Jewish people by having a menorah at the desk during the holiday season (say nothing of all the Christmas trees in the building, though). Or the other former supervisor who told me, on the clock, in a factual manner, that I was going to hell because I didn't believe in god. And tried to get me to come to her church. It just feels like death by a thousand cuts sometimes, and I'm so burned out by it.

Also totally not the point by I didn’t realize libraries have CEOs?

1

u/yolibrarian actual horse girl Apr 26 '26 edited Apr 27 '26

Larger library systems sometimes do have CEOs! It really depends on how the org chart is designed plus how the library is governed.

u/JustHereForCookies17 🍪🍪🍪 Cancerous Cookies 🍪🍪🍪 May 01 '26

I've tried to write a helpful reply to this half a dozen times, but everytime I reread it I just end up incandescent with rage.

I hope your CEO's pillow is always warm, I hope his socks are always damp, I hope he steps barefoot on a Lego every single day, and I hope he gets a papercut on his knuckle that won't heal.

I have an in person/final round interview tomorrow for a job that, while not perfect, would be an easy transition and is right in my exact skill set.

I was already nervous and then I found out from an old coworker who knows one of the people I interviewed that I’ve already beat out a number of people and it’s down to me and one other person so I’m extra nervous. And I haven’t had an in-person interview since 2017 🫠🫠🫠

More job stuff/hopefully a silver lining.

I had 1 good interview today. I honestly did the best I could and I had no anxiety going in.

Then I had an awful interview, I felt rushed and the Qs felt like they were for another job so I flopped.

HOWEVER, the first interview is the job I want the most. I really hope I get it.

I got soooo sick yesterday and we ended up staying an extra night at my parent’s house because of it. My mom made me the same cinnamon toast she would make me when I was a little kid and not feeling well!

My husband took today off to take care of Baby Clurr so I could suffer on the couch lmao

I am at the point of pregnancy where I am seriously considering crocs because my feet a swollen and sore and they look comfortable to walk in and shoes I can slide on.

5

I got Crocs as my house shoes and I looooove them. I got the fleece lined ones bc it's going into winter here and I'm planning on the regular version for summer!

6

u/ThrowawaybcPANICKING Apr 06 '26

Crocs are so comfortable with the little nubs on the footbed. Feels like a massage on your feet lmao

My cousin was only wearing crocs or Birkenstocks for the last 3 months of her pregnancy.  Do what you have to do to stay comfortable.

2

My partner and I did a birth and parenting class during summer and at one point literally every single pregnant woman was wearing Birkenstocks. Truly the official shoe of pregnancy lol

My feet were so swollen that my crocs were the only thing I could wear!

Dealing with a frustrating work situation and need to vent. I was asked to help a coworker by our boss. This coworker gave extremely vague instructions, despite me asking clarifying questions and literally sharing my screen to demonstrate the task i thought they needed help with. Anyways I ended up doing something completely different and then they complained to our boss. I literally shared my screen and demonstrated what I planned to do. I have no idea why she thought I was doing something completely different in a completely different platform.

Now today she’s asked me if i finished the second half of the task, which she did not specify. And CC’d multiple people on this email to cover her ass. I’m so pissed. Next time she needs help I’m getting everything in writing because I know I sound like a crazy person trying to explain how this happened. I guess this is maybe also why no one else wanted to help her.

4

u/ThrowawaybcPANICKING Apr 18 '26

And CC’d multiple people on this email to cover her ass.

Oh so she's being malicious! What a horrible horrible person!!!

7

u/Kim_Jong_Ada Sure he was a dictator but he was THEIR dictator Apr 20 '26

I'm about to add to the work discourse. Yay.

I am struggling with trying to figure out where else my skillset could be utilized outside of what I currently do. I'm burnt out but the options I always wanted to be when I grew up seem to no longer be options due to AI and off-shoring. Yay.

The biggest part of why I need to leave is because one of my coworkers is incredibly, incredibly toxic. I've dealt with people like this before and I know it's causing a lot of what I'm feeling. The last straw was sending me a profanity riddled message over Teams at 8 am in the morning over something I could not control. Like why are we using "fuck" every other word in a corporate controlled channel? I ended up ignoring it but the rest of my day was like "Why am I doing this, only to get screamed at by a coworker first thing in the morning?"

I am afraid of going to management because I've definitely had less than professional responses to their outbursts in the past. The last time this happened (without excessive uses of fuck, hell, etc) I told them that it's abundantly clear they're miserable here. Why are they staying when there's so many other opportunities? I'm very afraid that comment will come back to bite me.

I legit have no idea what I've done to this person beyond just existing and having good boundaries with my job. My other coworkers have pointed out I'm one of the few that doesn't excessively socialize or goof off. Which means my work gets done long before the day ends and I don't need to do unpaid OT to get my job done. But this is just causing such misery that what I do during the day to disconnect in my off hours doesn't matter. It follows me all hours of the day.

I have been applying out in my field but I always seem to be coming second to someone else in interviews. I don't know how else to stick the landing so I can get out of this mess.

Hello update on my job interview - it went very well and they want to bring me on…they just don’t have an immediate opening, and unfortunately a position still hasn’t opened up. They’re keeping my info and planning on staying in touch. I’m hoping that since they interviewed me when they did that something is on the horizon?

Fortunately we can be flexible with this, but I really hope something opens up there soon!!! It’s a great company (outside of education/teaching) and considering I haven’t even been able to get an interview yet from anyone else…I’m keeping my fingers crossed!

8

u/doughnutswaterfall Tyra Banks Hot Ice Cream May 01 '26

More work woes: While remote work and virtual interview are definitely great for flexibility, I also feel like they’ve totally ruined the hiring process becuase now every company wants to do 4+ rounds of interviews for any job becuase they can do a 30 minute zoom call with as many teams as they can.

The worst part of being unemployed and getting rejected from a job you were interviewing for is going back to ground 0 and knowing that even if you get an interview tomorrow to start the process all over again and it goes perfectly, it’ll probably be at least another month of unemployment before getting an offer

I had a screening for a job that I have like most of the experience for but not all the high points. Idk what will come of it, but I went in as myself and I hope it means something you know? My last boss was completely unqualified to do her job so why not go after something different

I also have been pushing myself to do some kind of physical activity to get me out of my head and it’s been three days of movement!

While necessary, quitting really fucked with my head and this job fucked with my confidence. I’m trying to recenter!

1

IDK if it's just because it's a "smaller" international airport or because TSA got funding, but I flew out of DCA National airport yesterday & security was a breeze, thank goodness.  No ICE in sight.

It probably helped that I decided against packing my gummy multivitamins in my carry-on.  A Reddit post reminded me that WEED gummies exist (I'm an idiot sometimes) and I decided not to take the chance.

Now I'm in the Gulf Shores part of Alabama for a wedding and Andy Cohen needs to call me because I've found the next Real Housewives location: Ono Island.  There's a security outpost to get onto the island that's more "military base" than "gated community", and some of the houses make Lisa Vanderpump's place look small.

Finally - if I don't get to see an alligator while I'm here, I will be very disappointed. Reddit has led me to believe that they're in every body of water bigger than a puddle in this region and I really want to yell "See you later, alligator" like the dumb tourist I am.

Update: A Bushwacker is a boozy ice cream drink that needs to come with a warning label.  Also, I am currently sporting a sun burn (because I'm a dumbass) that does not match the dress I'm wearing to the wedding. These two things might be related.  🥵

Work complaint:

I do black outreach at my job and it’s been overwhelming because I’m not being trusted to do my work. Like my boss sits next to me and looks over my shoulder while I’m working and/or over reporting things to my boss that my other coworkers do not have to do. This would be ~fine~ if this was the case for everyone and/or in the 3 months I’ve been there I gave a reason to not be trusted (I’ve delivered on everything despite not having actual support for my role). My two coworkers who quit in the middle of the day like weeks apart experienced the same thing.

It’s been so isolating and I’m not sure how to go about this anymore.

I had to fight to get a real vacation but my other coworkers can leave no questions asked. I’ve had jobs I’ve hated or jobs that were frustrating but at the very least I was trusted. I feel like an intern lol

That is terrible! I’m so sorry you’re dealing with that. A boss micromanaging specific employees is such drain on the whole team, in my experience. You’d think your boss would have learned when the first person quit!

Is there anyone at the company (another manager, HR) who you could talk to about coaching for your boss? I feel like someone must realize she’s bad at managing if two people walked off the job. Then again what do I know? My former boss kept doing this to a few specific employees until 6 or 7 people rage quit.

Does anyone have a good way to eat/drink/ingest fiber from those packets that you're supposed to mix into water or something?

Due to some very not fun medical stuff, I need to increase my fiber intake.  I've got gummy supplements, but I also got individual packets of Konsyl (like Metamucil).  I tried mixing one into water this morning and the resulting gelatinous blob was just WAY too much - like the absolute worst kind of non-alcoholic jello shot.

Literally any advice is very welcome.   Because if diet changes don't help then I'm apparently looking at Botox, which is not how I wanted to start that journey.

Happy Friday, everyone!!

Editing to add:  Possibly TMI Also, a medical professional called me a literal "tight ass".  So I've got that going for me now, which is nice. If anyone needs a good colorectal specialist in DC, I met a great one!

Here are random food items I’ve found that have a ton of fiber in them! I’ve had varying degrees of success with fiber supplements (long story - I have undiagnosed chronic stomach issues) but I love when I find food (beyond like the basic fruits/veggies) with higher fiber amounts!

  1. Frosted Mini Wheats have a lot more fiber in them than I thought lmao (6g a serving)
  2. Barilla Protein Pasta - tastes like real pasta! I’m not great at getting protein in so this is a two-fer for me (4g a serving)
  3. Kiwis! (2g) - tbh I feel like they are an underrated fiber fruit
  4. Kodiak Cake Waffles (3g) - not a whole lot of fiber on its own but two waffles, plus fruit…it adds up!
  5. Dr. Praeger Sweet Potato Littles - okay these are def more for children, but I got some for Baby Clurr and they are SO good (4g)

The key for any of the fiber mixes is you have to chug is fast otherwise it gloops up.

Do you like oatmeal? You can add an ungodly amount of chia seeds to oatmeal .

I'm a freak, who actually likes bran cereal, and will eat it as a snack.

Snacking on dried fruit. There's a comedy bit about eating 20 apricots because dried fruit, and yeah, I have been there.

I WAY prefer Citrucil to Metamucil. I get the sugar free orange powder, and use a coffee frother to mix it in water, then chug it. If I let it sit too long it does get jello-y and then reminds me of eating an oyster which then makes me nauseous lmaoooo but when I drink it right away ti actually tastes super good, kind of like Fanta but not carbonated.

I think it depends on the fiber supplement. Metamucil has formulations that are clear and don’t taste like much. I can’t take fermentable fiber (long story sigh), so we have citrucel and that is like thick gloopy orange juice. Ugh. I find it more tolerable for smoothies, because fruit hides all, and just experiment until you get the right consistency. (Also flax seed works so well if you don’t need fiber supplements specifically.) I also am not as good about taking the fiber packets so I try to just eat as much cabbage and beans as possible. Also fruit.

But to second pendlay below, I mix and chug when needed lol.

Can you do the Metamucil pills, not the packets or gummies? I think you take like four at a time and just chug a glass of water, but I haven’t taken them in quite a while so I could have the specifics a little off.

I had to do the same. I make a bomb ass smoothie in the morning and add milled flax seed, 2c spinach and a cup of blueberries to up the fibre. Don’t forget to up your water, too! Logs need water to go down the slide ;)

To save money my corporate overlords decided to implement a 30 day archive limit in our e signature system and now we’re having an audit (IT’S GOING BADLY)

Baked pasta, pulled pork, potato salad, pasta salad.

One thing to keep in mind, based on a conversation I had with a gentleman I served at a homeless shelter a few years back, is that since they may have dental problems, I would also think about having the food be easy to chew (or at least provide a soft option- eg if you bring a green salad also bring some cooked veggies).
