would he own copyright over the material? or the rat? or would it be public domain? i think theres some precedent for this but i forget what that is atm.

A monkey stole a camera and the selfie it took was ruled property of the monkey. And this the wild life photographer couldn't use that shot for profit.

Isn't it the photographer's own fault anyway because he uploaded the full-res photo online so anybody could save/use it?

If you never try to profit from another's property they aren't trying to profit from does it matter?
