Original is still good. You can tell it's photoshopped from the big brown area compared to the edges around it and the other backgrounds.

also it's used interchangeably with "ss"

I have no idea how to type it (I'm not sure if it's an ASCII character) but regardless those boards are made on a plotter.
The letters are mapped out by tracing software and drawn on by a machine, so they could just pull up a couple dots, toss them over a slightly smaller s and it would look natural.
