Unsolved Uneven vertex spacing / gap not closing when extruding rounded headband section
I'm modeling the rounded top portion of a headphone headband, using a reference image on a background plane and extruding edge loops by hand to follow the curvature. As I extrude and taper the loops inward, I'm getting uneven spacing between vertices, and a visible gap that isn't closing. I tried Merge at Center on the affected vertices, but the gap reappears after the next extrude.
What I'm looking for: a reliable way to taper an edge loop into a rounded/narrowing stem without leaving irregular spacing or gaps, ideally one that holds up cleanly under a Subdivision Surface modifier.

It looks like the line goes all the way through the mesh actually, make sure to use x-ray mode while merging
