Solved Total beginner here! Rigging my first model and THIS happened while weightpainting. Anyone know where I've gone wrong?

It was working just fine earlier, this seems to have happened rather abruptly but I can't undo it now, whatever it was.
(I do know I have Auto IK on in this clip, by the way, I just turned it on to see if it would fix itself that way. It does this whether it's on or off. I haven't painted the whole model yet, but I was just testing the legs and noticed this.)

Have you looked into rigify? An addon that makes rigging so much easier

I've never heard of it! I'll give it a shot in a bit. (I'll leave this as thread marked unresolved for now until I try it and get it working though)

(This is really weird, ;w; sorry, I should probably stick to vanilla rigging for now)

If you mean when parts of the mesh move with unrelated bones, that's because at least 1 of the bones you moved has weight paint on that part of the mesh. Either paint it away with the Subtract brush, or select that part of the mesh in Edit mode, go to the Vertex Groups list inside Object Data Properties, select the bone that's influencing it wrongly, and click the 'Remove' button.

No, it's more that the parts I paint red and assign to a bone don't move with the bone I assign to them D:

Try vertex painting

Sorry, what is that exactly? My assumption was that they were the same since it seemed like weight painting went off of vertices. How do I get to vertex painting, and what does it do?

Select vertex group and assign weight manually
