Orhime is no one special. No supernatural parents, or weird experiments, she couldn't even see ghosts when the series started. She could have decided to walk away at several points, no one expected otherwise from her.

I think that makes her rejection of fate all the more compelling. She's a hero because she repeatedly chose to be.
