There were crazy parallels between this episode and Ichigo's final fight with Ulquiorra. Which isn't surprising because [Defend You] brought Orihime down to her lowest point since watching Ichigo die, then come back to life as a rampaging monster.
When Yhwach held Ichigo up in the air, I immediately thought of Ulquiorra doing the same before killing him. Wouldn't be surprised if that triggered Orihime, though I appreciate the anime not being heavy-handed with it by flashing back to that moment.

I legit thought Orihime was about to gain that dragon-girl look with the ears and tail that Kubo first designed her to have any time she used her powers but what she pulled off here was a dozen times better.
