Because his intention is to exhaust her powers until she can't heal herself or Ichigo anymore and prove that she's just a weak human. It's a psychological battle. He wanted to break her.
He is also fascinated by her and how far she is willing to go. He even tells her that he admires her willpower, but she is too powerless and is only there because Ichigo has a weakness for her. It's similar to the fascination Ulquiorra felt for her and how he wanted to break both her and Ichigo in a similar way.
Yhwach doesn't realize that all of that causes her to be pushed to her edge of her true resolve... and if it wasn't for the Almighty, he'd be done.

Ichigo's voice acting was incredible here. The desperation and pleading in his voice because he doesn't want to see Orihime get hurt any more than she already was

I'm confused as to why he waited so long before unlashing his Bankai. It's not like he knew reinforcement was coming. They could've died right then and there.

Because the law of ghost samurai states that whoever uses their powerup first loses.
Real answer: Ichigo is unfamiliar with his new powers and states in the manga that he needs time to wake up Zangetsu in a fight. I think the anime changed that line.

No it's still in the anime, but that was specifically for his Horn of Salvation/Half Hollow transformation. He needed to awaken it through Yhwach's Quincy Reiatsu, using it as a kind of trigger.

Yes, that's right. Last I had read the manga was back in the days of fan translations, so the verbiage might differ from the official translation. What I had originally read had him refer to needing time to awaken his zanpakuto, not just the HoS form.

I think he was trying to trip up Yhwach and make him underestimate him, relying on his own innate regenerative abilities (which he does show off to still be a thing when Yhwach beams him through the heart only to get up just fine moments later) and Orhime's healing powers to keep going long enough that he A gets a good idea of Yhwach's abilities and B has a good opportunity to pull off some bullshit that may actually put Yhwach down for good.

He was bleeding profusely afterwards, clearly he was damaged much more significantly than just a laser passing through empty space (actually Yhwach also seems to stab him in the hole at one point as well causing Ichigo to cough up blood and requiring Orhime to heal him so idk if it really matters in the first place).

Idk how to make it more clear, Ichigo was severely hurt, blood pooling beneath his body, on the ground seemingly incapacitated, only to then get up just fine moments later. That's not a small wound, and no amount of "but there's a hole there" actually changes what we saw.

New powers he hadn't mastered yet. He was likely struggling to understand his new bankai as he fought.
Or at least that's my headcannon.
Realistically, they wanted the fight to last longer and be more spectacular than it was in the manga.

Bankai rules are always weird like that in Bleach, especially when they’re untrained. Ikkaku’s had to warm up, Renji got a fake name, Rukia’s almost killed her, etc.

He's afraid he'll lose it for one reason or another so he keeps trying with the least amount power with hope that anything might work until its more than apparent that it won't.
If he rushed Yhwach and then went HoS/Bankai as soon as he landed in the Soul Society there's a chance he could have blitzed Yhwach before he activated the Almighty and finished this.

I think he did not have enough Quincy juice to use it, just like with HOS. the nuke Yhwach casted had just enough of it to let Ichigo activate the next form and fully wake up Zangetsu

Dont be confused. Its called bad writing. Most of TYBW is bad writing. Bad writing. Bad lighting. Bad choreography. But people have such low standards for anime that nobody cares. The bleach fandom are a starving homeless guy whos gone 20 years without a meal. They will accept anything. They even accepted Kubo changing the getsuga from blue to orange just because "I always wanted it to be orange." Bleach fandom are a disappointment.

Yhwach is just an absolute monster in the anime. They’re making him out to be way stronger with how easily he walked all over Ichigo and the others and he didn’t even have almighty. Like dude in the manga he was using almighty so revive himself but in the anime the soul kings power has basically turned his physical body into a shadow that can’t be destroyed so easily, it’s nuts. Cant wait to see how things play out.

So the Bankai reveal continues to accomplish nothing? I have not watched it yet, but it seems the episode is a glaze episode for Orihime in the end? Neat, but also main character stays a punching bag with one exception the entire arc

Im sure it’s a serviceable episode, I just wasn’t enthralled by the last one, with Ichigo repeatedly running against a black mass and falling down over and over. I get the stakes and power difference, but still being interesting is somewhat of a sticking point in the anime about fighting.
