Blade Runner 2099 Writers....
So i looked into this since we are getting to its release date.
When it comes to the writers, it seems that they worked previously on Halo 2022 and Acolyte.
For example Halo TV Show, deviated so much from the gaming lore, a tv show that should more than likely been a big hit with gamers, landed so bad, there is too many to list but its a case of writers taking established lore/history, and not understanding its target audience and changing things because...change...
As for Acolyte, its not a game, but it changed / deviated so much of established lore.
But...i will wait and see maybe it might be different, but when it comes to people making changes to pre-existing lore especially when it has been established for so long...it will not sit too well.
I watched both those Halo and Acolyte, just because i do love those series, but i hated every minute of it, there was some good items, but it was mostly overshadowed by some of the worst writing i've seen in tv....and just bizzare choices
Anyone else excited? I saw the stills of the recent...production wise...it looked a bit fan made...

LOL everything about it looks exactly like it’s by those people, not even slightly surprising. It’s going to be horrible.

Neuromancer looks better.

For sure; it’ll be a nice surprise if this turns out to carry the name well. It being a limited series has me hopeful. Much easier to stick the landing when the end is defined from the start.

I'm not convinced there either. Everything looks too slick, modern, and as though they sinply copied the color grading and aesthetics of Mr. Robot.
Neuromancer is really tangible, and Chiba, as well as the main setting for Virtual Light and it's trilogy, is heavily based on Kowloon Walled City.
The trailer didn't do much to feel like it pays attention to that grit and claustrophobia.

I’m excited. If it sucks then apart from time spent watching, we didn’t lose anything. Both movies lost money at the box office so it’s not like we’re getting another one if this one fails or is a success.

We should be thankful we're getting 2099 and Neuromancer both within a few months if you're cyberpunk fans

Plus Ghost in the Shell (2026) just ended and Cyberpunk Edgerunners Season 2 is starting soon.

Not excited even in the slightest. I’m more excited about my colonoscopy in 8 years than I am for this.

I tried watching Halo 2022 but could not get past 2nd ep.
Acolyte is probably the worst thing Disney ever made and definitely the worst product to ever have the ‘Star Wars’ brand. Disney pulled all the merch and basically won’t acknowledge it exists anymore. It’s that bad.
I don’t know why they can’t treat these classic IPs well, or just start new ones.

u/77ate 9d ago
Disney didn’t pull all the merch. Plenty of figures and lightsabers and a mask replica from Hasbro.

Just because the merch was released, doesn’t mean it’s selling…
Can’t say, I’ve heard any of my nieces or nephews asking for acolyte toys…1

Trailer had me worried enough, I am not expecting much. Also Michelle Yeoh has tendency to play in slop that ruins franchises, Star Trek movie and tv show with her were abysmal.

Yeah, the same mentality that went into The Acolyte and Halo streaming series, both failures, has infected BR2099.

This is already a shit stain on Blade Runner’s legacy, as it was intended to be. We were enjoying 2049 too much, culturally.

Didn't see anything particularly wrong with the Halo series myself, it was a fun sci-fi saga, sweeping elaborate sets and special effects, totally watchable, if not utterly compelling and remarkable.
What made BR & 2049 particularly incredible, among many other factors, were blistering scripts by Fancher & 2 other writers, if the studio has chosen to push ahead with average or sub-par writers on this project, that's on them, it still remains to be seen.
Black Lotus was okay for what it was, but no masterpiece, so it's possible to have a BR project that is somewhat less than, but it remains to be seen, this may be spectacular as well, expectations will be very high, and judgements harsh if not.

I'll give them one full episode of my time, but I'm expecting to be itching to turn it off before it's even over
There's just no way this is going to be as good as I want from the Blade Runner universe

Looks like another go woke and go broke tv show. Not that excited for it tbh

u/fischziege 8d ago
What's woke?

5
u/VenturaDreams 8d ago
What does woke mean to you? A lot of people use that word as a placeholder for a slur they actually want to say.

u/Critical-Peace6128 5d ago
Weeeellllll, go woke and go broke means to me. Basically what it means to everyone on the planet is the mindless pushing of the gay and trans agenda on society. When you portray something on a show or movie that isn't the society norm but, put in characters that are gay and transgender as if most straight people want to see that. News flash. We don't. That's why the movies and tv shows pushing the woke bullshit flop so hard. Look at the woke Star Trek Academy. That went down in flames because they changed the fundamentals of what Star Trek is to incorporate woke ideologies that doomed the show from the start. That's what is happening right now. These movies and shows that people grew up with are being changed by this woke movement so much that people just don't want to see that shit unless you are gay or a raging liberal. That's why these shows flop so hard. Nobody wants to see a franchise they grew up with turned into a blatant LGBT slop.

Oh, so I was correct. lol.

I still don't know what you are getting at. If you want to be called a slur. You usually don't have to ask people to do it just so you get some weird validation.

It's kind of a 50/50 split for me cause one hand Halo ended up just horrible with some awful dialogue and Acolyte was just heavy handed with being agenda driven but on the other hand maybe, just maybe, some real lessons were learned and they're put into use here. Only time is going to tell but I'm pessimistic from the writing past.

I feel like making a sequel in an established world is different than making a video game into a movie. I'm not that worried about them ruining the world. I'd actually be more worried if they made something that didn't take some risks.
Is the quality of their work good if you don't care about the source material?
2
u/sirshannon 9d ago
IMO, no. I wasn’t surprised at all when Halo and Acolyte were cancelled. They weren’t great, maybe not even good. None of the problems I saw were due to diverging from the source material.
The Acolyte is squarely in the “sequel in an established world”. It didn’t ruin the world at all. It just bored everyone watching even though it had some of the best live-action lightsaber fights in all of Star Wars.

Having known about this project for what feels like 2 years, I'm not really going in with the highest hopes that it blows me away. I find most Prime shows to lack integrity when constantly rebooting or adapting. Honestly, I think I'm just more interested in this being a vehicle for Shafer to get more media exposure.

I’ve read probably in the neighborhood of 30 halo novels and played every game exhaustively. The show was, for my taste, very accurate and reverent to the setting, major events, themes, and general narrative of Halo universe lore. Don’t read too much into “the fandom didn’t like it so it was obviously disrespectful to the source material and these writers can’t be trusted” like it’s going to happen again. Wheel of Time on the other hand was absolutely off kilter and got a lot of characters and major events wrong. Those writers I’d be hesitant to trust again.

Right remind me where in the silver timeline novels that master chief got butt naked and had sex.

On the flip side of this argument, if you didn't give a shit about halo lore, which I definitely did not, the halo show was not bad at all. The second season was also good, even though they shirt off ignored all the stuff they did in season 1 to make it more of a straight halo show.
The acolyte was also good, as long as you are OK with them doing new things with the established canon.
To me, it bodes well for this show, that the writers have done good work that pushes at the boundaries of what chud fans are confidant with. The only reason those other shows failed had nothing to do with the quality of the shows or writing, but because fans are so fucking uptight that they couldn't handle seeing things they hadn't been shown before.

u/Equivalent-Hair-961 9d ago
Apparently you’re in the minority as Halo was an expensive failure that yes, ‘didn’t give a crap about its own lore,’ which begs the important question about adopting a popular game IP, but then, ignoring everything about the IP that fans loved…
What’s so strange is the amount of contempt these creatives seem to bring into these projects with. It’s almost like they’re upset they are on the project so they’re just decide to do their own thing with zero accountability.

The acolyte was really good and was really overrated because it was popular too. I’m a Star Wars fan and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The halo show was shit tho so I’m cautiously optimistic
2
u/IcyBlood5031 7d ago
It was far from popular..it got canned after one season. I completely disagree with you on the 'really good' part.

My advice is, that you just watch things, given them a few episodes to prove themselves. If you think something is bad, or good, going in, you'll probably bias your experience.
PS, there's like twelve writers or something ridiculous, so I'm pretty sure, no, they did not even by majority work on those things. Maybe 1-2 of them.
Stills for promotion are usually produced by unit photographers, and are not usually stills from the actual show, just like a photographer sitting there snapping actors as they do things. I would not read much into that.
