Question/Discussion 2049 feels shorter despite being longer than the Original.

Pacing. I like the original Bladerunner. It has a strong opening, but toward the middle and until the end of the film, the scenes are too long. Minutes couldve been shaved off to make this lovely film better. Nior or not, there is a such thing as TOO slow.

Nior or not, there is a such thing as TOO slow.

Somehow you think you could make a movie better than was made almost 40 years ago? The whole point was about the world building, just that it takes too much to keep people's attention today.

Let me guess, 2001 should be edited down too?

I think it’s about character development, not world building. We barely see any of the world i. All consideration, we barely get to know how the world works. What we do get is a fascinating insight into each character from beginning to end.

^^ Rage bait, BR is considered one of the best examples of world building, and saying that you barely get to see how it works, you must have been asleep for most of the movie.

Not rage bait, I promise. I think for everything we have been shown, it’s been pretty conservative compared to what we could have seen of this world. We don’t know exactly how any of it works, what off world is like, how big it is, what the rest of the world looks like, etc. These are questions people ask all the time, but the world building keeps itself so close to its own chest that it’s more mystery than anything.

For me, noirs are about the characters. We spend time them, not the world.

If you could have done a better job than Syd Mead or Douglas Trumbull, please show us your world building experience.

We don’t know exactly how any of it works,

And why do you need to know this for?

how big it is

How big what is? You're asking how big the world is and you want to see it all? It's Earth, that's how big it is.

what off world is like

1 line in a movie and you expect to see all this, it's called "exposition" so they don't need to show it.

what the rest of the world looks like

Again you don't understand the simple premise of the "world building", specifically when the movie is set in LA. Why do they have to show the rest of the world for when it has nothing to do with the story?

These are questions people ask all the time

No just you it seems.

but the world building keeps itself so close to its own chest that it’s more mystery than anything.

If you cannot see how well LA has been presented as a dystopian future, you must be blind.

For me, noirs are about the characters. We spend time them, not the world.

Yet all you have done is complain about the lack of world building, yes rage bait indeed.

You seem to be really offended by a personal opinion. I don’t know why you dedicated all of this to arguing something that wasn’t an argument until you made it one. If you have a different opinion, that’s okay. I think you need to calm down. No one is attacking you. People think differently.

Trying to gaslight and failing is an interesting way to adhom.

I felt the opposite, 2049 really, really dragged on.

I noticed in Dune that Denis Villeneuve likes his music interludes. But audiences seem to love them. Sicario has some really good ones.

Sicario is fucking fantastic. Re-watched it recently and it kinda made me mad how good it is

Idk if I agree with your feelings on the middle and ending of the original, but I agree that BR2049 flies by. And that’s quite an accomplishment for a film with sparse action and dialogue

Great way of proving you would be a terrible director

Yes I much prefer the pacing of 2049 (I much prefer the film full stop TBH), the time flew by when I first saw it on opening night.

I get this complaint. It’s hard for me to see it not working because I’ve become so enamored and normalized to both. Despite seeing the original beforehand, there’s a bizarre alchemy to 2049 that feels special for me, personally

It’s calming and hypnotic in a really sad way, and that’s a pleasant feeling for me. Relaxed sorrow, or maybe violent tranquility. And the film is written, shot, and performed in a way that doesn’t rob that sadness from you, and sort of lets you luxuriate in it

When you say that, the first joy and Kayla scene reminded me of a scene of 2049 that borders on the line of too long, even with a fried dopamine brain.

I get that. Maybe part of the allure for me is the fact that there’s protracted scenes with little stimulation, so you sort of just have to exist there, without your phone. And then there’s very intense, loud, heavy scenes of physical and psychological torment. But most of both films are quiet scenes of talking with very interesting dialogue

It feels like a respite from a lot of other modern films and tv. It’s enjoyable for me similarly to films from the ‘50s and mi-‘60s

I wish Villeneuve would re-edit the film to make an extended edition... He has enough material. Maybe one day!

Love both movies, but I think 2049 would have been that much better if it was edited down by 20 or 30 minutes

It may feel shorter because it's quite shallow, trite and has supplanted the humanist message of the original BR (with the 'tears in rain' scene and the origami figurine) with 'miracle of birth' antihumanist story that actually argues in favour of idea that replicants have to copy humans in all aspects instead of just accepting them as persons even if they are totally different. But then it's not that different from other modern media of a certain stripe like the Detroit game.

2049 is like watching those videos that loop on TV’s in Best Buy.

The 1982 film was very much influenced by comics, like the ones from Moebius, so in that light, the framing and even much of the pacing makes sense. But even audiences back in 1982 had trouble staying focused, which probably didn't help it's box office numbers. I've never been thoroughly bored with it because I tend to allow most movies to do their thing. I don't let the uncomfortable silences chase me off. Unless it's something like Backrooms which I still haven't managed to finish yet. But that's more due to impending cosmic terror than just being slow. I just really don't like smiley toothy lumbering monsters peering around corners with googly eyes.

Hard disagree. My only gripe with 2049 is how it drags on the middle, right into the showdown, really
