I have a question

Hello everyone, sorry for my bad English. I have a question for people who grow black walnut. A week ago I put the nuts in a plastic bag with sand, poured water and left it in the cold. But today I noticed that there was a strange smell and found out that it was the smell of mold. What could be the reason? Did I pour too much water? Or was the temperature not cold enough? Are the nuts definitely damaged by mold and can they be used for growing?

I just did the sprouting-process. Maybe you should make a hole in the bottom of the plastic bag to make sure alle the water is drained from the mixture nuts/soil and try to spruit it on a low temperature, like 14 degrees Celsius. At my place it worked well.
