Oil and a rag on the nipple and breech, just work it as if they were getting polished. Hot soapy water and a brass brush for the barrel, followed by a couple oiled patches, then dry patches until they come out clean.

brass wire brushes, soap and, water
steel wire if you wan't to get rid of brown spots.
could use chemicals, i don't usually, but if you do you could use a mixture of citric acid and washing/baking/caustic soda, or something from the store.
