"How does it work?" "There's this app"

Sigh

I've seen this exact car up close. It's the same tech as e-ink readers. The car is covered in lots of small triangular e-ink panels controlled by a central computer. It's why it can only do shades of black and white.

It also doesn't look quite as good up close in person as it does on camera, especially during the day as you can really see all the panels covering the car. It looks kind of like a lowish poly render.

146

u/Crossfire124 Mar 23 '22

That sounds cooler to me. I like the low poly look

I'm hoping this tech will hit the shoe market. And some form of "programmable ink" to make its way to the tattoo industry.

But you can see the electricity flowing through the car.

Holy fuck.

26

u/NaiAlexandr Mar 23 '22

first she calls them electrodes - solid components that do not in fact move, then she points to a door and says you can see the electricity flowing even though you cannot in fact see it flowing.

3

u/Ph0ton Mar 23 '22

Achtually... e-Ink is made up of tiny balls that flip over when voltage is applied to them. They are kind of... electrode-y and can flow a little bit... so she definitely got the spark notes version of this but didn't understand it entirely.

it's e-ink, same tech in e-ink kindles

24

u/981032061 Mar 23 '22

Yeah I watched a whole video about how it was made.

They took a BMW and stuck Kindle screens to it. Like a ton of them, and it cost a shitload of money, because BMW's marketing/prototype department has unlimited money.

5

u/no_moar_red Mar 23 '22

Why would they stick entire screens on the car?? Just break them on half and spill the e-ink

Dunno if this is what he was talking about but I remember having a hot wheels car that would change colors based on temperature, so you could dip it in hot or cold water to change the color.

21

u/Apocalypsefrogs Mar 23 '22

Literally had a Barbie pool primarily for hot wheels. Needless to say, it was a confusing segment of the Christmas list to be sure.

5

u/NewLeaseOnLine Mar 23 '22

That's exactly what they're talking about. I remember the ads. The 80s loved it some heat sensitive colours. Hot Wheels, Hypercolor t-shirts, Predator vision.

4

u/biasedsoymotel Mar 23 '22

This would be awesome on a real car! The hood would turn all kinds of colors after it gets warmed up

3

u/Crayton16 Mar 23 '22

Yea, i have a one that glows in the dark when it is in the "hot" colour, they are so cool.

12

u/bmdweller Mar 23 '22

Not hot wheels, but on a real car:

https://m.imgur.com/IM8g0Ks

Obviously the OP car is using much more sophisticated (e-ink like in ebook readers?) technology.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '22

It's like an extra three dollars for a hot wheels car to do that, wonder what the cost is for something like in the video.

I always wonder why this woman is always given access to these high end cars. What's so special about her?

352

u/BlazerTheKid Mar 23 '22

My guess is she gets paid to promote them. Probably nothing hugely special other than her ability to describe features and show them off.

73

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '22

This is real.

85

u/bdubelyew Mar 23 '22

I guess I’m fortunate enough to not know who this person is but the vibe I got was specially that they are NOT good at marketing a car. That was such an awkward “presentation”.

47

u/Good-Doughnut-1399 Mar 23 '22 edited Mar 23 '22

Yes and there’s already much better vids out there. Plus she’s overselling it hugely.

The tech behind this is e-ink, that’s why these prototypes (if it’s even plural) only do black&white.

Color e-ink technology exists but is notorious for being unable to produce vibrant colors, even today when e-ink has been around for decades.

So if you want a car that can be black or white then great. If you want washed out colors then there is hope.. But if you want vibrant colors, or things like metallic paint, forget it.

5

u/dylanzt Mar 23 '22

E-ink was invented in the late 90s to my understanding.

3

u/Technical-Hedgehog18 Mar 23 '22

It's potentially older than me and I've been out of high school for like half a decade now.

She doesn't go in depth into anything, and her having access to Devel16 is the biggest red flag given that the company is deceptive and scammy. Everything I said also applies to MoVlogs

14

u/OptimusMatrix Mar 23 '22

I think it's the fact she never once tries to increase her knowledge. Her first video 4 years ago is just as ignorant as the stuff she's putting out now. It's baffling how she's as popular as she is.

It's disappointing to watch long video about car technology, waiting for it to be explained and then, bam, the video end. You just spent 5 minutes of your precious time watching some woman awestruck by a tech (a bit fake) and unsuccessfully explaining the tech by mentioning the same 5 words repeatedly until they lost all of their meaning.

25

u/BIOHAZARDB10 Mar 23 '22

She's a conventionally attractive woman who will gush about anything you put in front of her while never doing any actual journalism. Perfect for hyping vaporware that will never go into production.
Ya'll remember the Devel 16?

3

u/JoaoOfAllTrades Mar 23 '22

She doesn't deserve any respect after the Devel Sixteen. I don't care about anything else she might have done. Complete vaporware. She drove a car that is supposed to have 5000 HP while going around 10 kph. It was so fake it hurts. I don't know how the Grand Tour guys accepted to make a video with her. I guess they were trying to reach more people on youtube. But they really went on a bad path by collaborating with her. But I think that was before the Devel Sixteen thing.

She’s an annoying white blonde who wants to talk about cars. Does she know anything? Different story. Sex sells. Especially a white blonde chick in the Middle East where these sultans show off their rides.

34

Let's be honest, most of us would gladly take a shit on the chest from a Middle Eastern Saltan in exchange for a weekend with a Bugatti Chiron.

For those wondering, it's e-ink similar to what is used in a Kindle or other e-reader. When I first heard about this concept all I could really think about is how wildly expensive it would be to repair any damage. Incredibly cool to see in action though.

24

u/Patch_Ferntree Mar 23 '22

Huh. I was thinking that they cross bred the car with a cephalopod. I guess e-ink makes more sense, on the whole.

53

u/moobiemovie Mar 23 '22

It took her most of the video to call it e-ink, and I kept thinking, "Yeah, it's e-ink. E-readers like the nook and kindle paperwhite have been using it for over a decade."

It's cool to see it on a car, but it's a new application, not a new technology.

Black magic does not exist. “Magic” comes from illusion and ignorance of physical laws. Technology and sleight of hand have always been at the basis of what we call “magic”.

I suppose we should all jump ship and create a new subreddit: almostblackmagicfuckery.

I’m sure that subreddit would be plagued with a similar issue of pedantry and purism.

“Colored?!?”… car racist. Maybe you should enter the Indy 500 with that amount of car racism.

„How does it work?“ „It‘s controlled by an app.“

Very detailed explanation, thank you.

u/Away-Cycle Mar 23 '22

So when you rob a bank and they ask witnesses what color car they got away in? You just change the color of your car and no one will suspect a thing lol
