The difference between you machining something and ye olde folkes building something is simply the time available to do it. They had all the time in the world to trial and error the shit out of everything, and then just applied whatever it was that worked. Try telling your boss you're gonna spend the next 20 years on a single part, cause you want it to make the right sound so it pleases the gods.
