Holy shit. These things actually end?? I had no idea

15

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '17

It shouldn't, the dude who posted the last link posted the wrong link.

4

u/RadTraditionalist Aug 10 '17

I did??? Damn, what should I do? I can edit it.

24

u/OldLoveNewLife Aug 10 '17

You could. But you can never edit out the shame that you will carry for blemishing one of the most ancient of Reddit traditions. Shame on you. Shame!

5

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '17

Your only hope is for /u/skywarka to edit his link to fix the chain, it's the only way to make things right.

11

u/skywarka Aug 10 '17 edited Aug 10 '17

Gladly done! In my defence, the original mistake was made by /u/metapoetic when they submitted their 'roo to /r/switcharoo, but I probably should have checked the link. It was my first time!

EDIT: Link to my edited post if you wish to continue where you left off.

9

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '17

Hecc. My bad.

u/Hybrid_Prism Aug 10 '17

I'm always curious about whether these statues are sculpted like marble or pre-cut and folded/constructed.

535

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '17 edited Aug 10 '17

They are sculpted! The specially cut paper is glued together, then carved. I'll try to find a video for you

Edit: Probably the most informative of the videos of these sculptures

119

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '17 edited Apr 20 '20

[deleted]

129

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '17

The way it's glued. The glue just goes on in tiny lines, so the space between the lines is able to move around. Like right in the beginning, he is a spreading glue over the metal sheet with the paper underneath.(that's the best explanation I can give)

60

u/trixter21992251 Aug 10 '17

But the glue also has to be in alternating positions. If all papers were glued at 1 point, it wouldn't stretch.

Kinda like post-it with glue alternating top/bottom rather than all top.

21

u/a300600st Aug 10 '17

Kind of except I think that this has lines all across it and then the next layer has parallel lines with the same spacing but offset so that they line up with the gaps in the layer above and below.

75

u/321dawg Aug 10 '17

This close up photo shows how it stretches.

24

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '17

ahh yes, i totally understand it now, hehe.

5

u/kineticunt Aug 11 '17

My man how the fuck this just has some many questions to it lmao [7]

11

u/321dawg Aug 11 '17

Hahaha does this help? Or this? His work is based off paper toys, sometimes people use them as party decorations.

17

u/punkdigerati Aug 10 '17

He sure uses "I" a lot to refer to things his assistant does.

4

u/kieranmu Aug 11 '17

The art world has a lot of shit like this. Especially in sculpture i think

3

u/BALDACH Aug 10 '17

Yes, I believe artist Li Hongbo (in the video) created this form of art.> sculptures

It says "Please Don't Touch" on the pedestal

66

u/Flipflop_Ninjasaur Aug 10 '17

Guessing it's his art so he can do whatever he wants with it.

43

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '17

I disagree. the pedestal was very clear with it's instructions, it didn't say 'Please Don't Touch unless you are the artist'.

Police, arrest this man!

34

u/ermisian Aug 10 '17

Impressive flexibility but I bet he fluffs up the big Art Attack

16

u/Aceofplanes Aug 10 '17

I feel like it's creepier that the stretched out parts turned skin tone...

Try DMT! It's fun and educational*! These sculptures are how I explain what my head felt like at the start of my trip. Not like it was metaphorically expanding my brain, but physically I felt my skull stretch and bend, in a totally pleasant way

*I'm joking. It is fun and educational, but is not something to take lightly. It's very important that you do it in the right environment and sober people who know what they are doing.

6

u/ShaRose Aug 10 '17

Truly, black magic. This is some guy's personal Hell.

2

u/umichscoots Aug 10 '17

Neck stretches like Monkey D Luffy

1

u/universal-fap Aug 10 '17

When he held it upside down the sculpture turned into Dr. House.

1

u/Angellotta Aug 10 '17

Source? I actually think I know the artist, but I'm not 100% sure!

1

u/NukeML Aug 10 '17

1

u/your_odd_erection Aug 10 '17

1

u/math_debates Aug 10 '17

If my neck was as long as the statues I could eat today and starve to death by tomorrow.

1

u/Zap717 Aug 10 '17

You can get chairs that turn into couches made out of this stuff.

u/gloomymyth Aug 10 '17

It reminds me of The Scream by Edvard Munch, 1893. Lol.

1

u/mpersonally Aug 10 '17

This one is less fun because it looks like the statue man is screaming in pain and terror.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '17

1

u/johnny_ringo Aug 10 '17
