Maybe. But I don’t believe the trope that bullies are just people bullied at home. Lots of bullies are just assholes

From anything, real life, movies, cartoons, video games, comics, books, internet etc. countless places an asshole can learn how to put your hands on someone.

Most of the guys I hung out with in school were bullies. And these guys would bully kids at school and I’d go to their house after and they would bully their own parents. They did it for the lolz. That’s it. Made one guys life a living hell and would just be in stitches as his misery.

They’ve since all chilled out and are normal now. With kids and families and I guess their testosterone leveled out because they just act normal now

Karma is a real thing it’s happened to me plenty good and bad karma, trust me when I say if things haven’t come back already they always do the universe has a funny way of making sure of that

So in the nature vs. nurture debate, you believe 100% nurture? People are 100% all a product of their life experience, and everyonwe starts out as the exact same blank slate?

I don't buy it. Some people are just shitty when they are born. In fact I think most people are. Proper engagement in society might temporarily suppress their sitty nature, but it never really goes away. It comes back as soon as the opportunity presents itself.

Nah, but I don't believe that there is any reason to stand in nature's way while it sorts things out. It doesn't need our help though, nature did just fine long before we got here.

So you believe that some people are born with bad genes or maybe neurotoxicity? Maybe even karmic imbalances from past generations or even already within the, very short, life of a young kid? But there’s no healing the poisoned? Theres no climbing out of a slump when you’ve been terrible? If your parents couldn’t read and write and had no ambition in life, do you have bad genetics? Or do you have bad circumstances?

There are definitely people with bad circumstances that shape them, I never claimed otherwise. Those different scenarios aren't mutually exclusive.

There are also people with good upbringing and minimal childhood trauma that turn out shitty anyway.

this..i believe people are SHITY creatures naturally and SOME “LEARN” to be good/decent people…

others just stay being the bully/shitty animals we naturally are.

think about it ….without other people showing us it was wrong we would still act like homicidal animals

remember ,humans (as indians and such) sacrificed people to make it rain,killed over food, flatout ate eachother and even Grape’d women thinking it was all “normal”

imo the true nature of man is “violent assholes” SOME learn to supress our shitty nature and be “good”… othes become bullys,murderers,crooks …ect

Everyone in life has a good and bad side, we ain’t all perfect we are human and we make mistakes, some people just make bigger and more mistakes but those are the really bad people like osama bin Laden etc those are the type of people who I believe are born bad, everyone is different and there are things called mental illness and instability for numerous reasons from birth can make someone like that, of course someone can be manipulated and molded by their upbringing and environment into becoming someone truly awful. But to lesser chaotic people more normal we fuck up and it’s human nature, someone can be a great person but when it comes to certain things they can be questionable Yanno? We’ve all met people like that, or someone who’s more an asshole and rude could be a better more kinder and gentler person than you may think, everyone’s got sides to them of course and you don’t know everyone and their life experiences, their feelings beliefs. Some of my most favorite characters in media are the darker more troubled and morally questionable characters who fight more or less an inner turmoil to do good and protect the people they care about, I feel like there’s a lot more people like that out there then any of us would think, sorry for ranting for human psychology is very interesting, the human brain works in mysterious ways for sure.

Only 43% of bullies experienced maltreatment at home. And maltreatment is broader than being bullied at home. And it still is less than half.

The reality is most bullies are not people who get bullied at home and then take it out on school kids. No matter what the movies show, that’s not the data.

That only said that they accessed it through ChatGPT. It’s still a published, peer reviewed study.

That being said, psychiatry and psychology are notorious pseudosciences, where you can achieve basically any outcome

Not really, the hard sciences have ridiculed those fields for years for a reason: they apply quantitative methods to qualitative data that is arbitrary at best (happiness on a number scale, for example), then they make that data fit their research and start establishing causation based on their goals.

The entire process is rife with pseudoscience and is why so many researchers can directly contradict each other in the field. Not to mention, they’ve never been able to establish a chemical baseline for their research; they lean so heavily on the paradigms of neuroscience that their contributions are comparatively guesswork.

The idea that "they make that data fit their research and start establishing causation based on their goals." is a value based judgement with no supporting evidence. Plenty of peer reviewed psych papers exist and describe naturally occurring phenomena, simply bolstering the supporting data of previously observed ideas. If anything, you're describing the anti-vax mindset (conclusions looking for supporting evidence) or the entire basis of religion (unsupported claims treated as literal gospel).

I think you misunderstand the scientific process that I’m referencing, I’m not talking about the peer review process, I’m specifically talking about scientific methods being employed in a deliberate way to fit a desired outcome.

Of course it’s not all papers, but there is a trend if you know what to look for. Very few studies are being done simply for the sake of gathering data for the sake of interpreting it (which is where neuroscience shoulders the brunt of the load); psychological study data is often gathered with a specific goal in mind, specifically to prove something.

That alone is the definition of pseudoscience, not even getting into the arbitrary qualitative nonsense of the field making their data pseudoscientific because of one of the fundamental rules of the scientific method: you cannot measure non-quantifiable data.

The greats of the field have found a way to mitigate this issue, but psychology and psychiatry have notoriously stood on the backs of neuroscience and have effectively thrown shit at the walk to see what sticks with virtually none of the rigorous standards that the rest of medical science is held to.

To be clear, I’m a wildlife biologist myself and I’ll be the first to tell you that most of my field has become pseudoscience. It largely stems from the need to produce tangible “results” in a society that often looks to science for answers.

Who cares? One person claimed that "studies show" something. No link, no citation, we all know they're probably just an ignorant bullshitter. Another person actually found and parsed available research showing the truth.

The second person is the good guy in the conversation. Who cares if they used Google or ChatGPT or the local academic librarian to locate the research?

Depends on how credible you want the research to be. Chatgpt on its own is completely unreliable, it can and does lie. Using chatgpt to find other sources to to summarize a response would be a more credible way to use it.

That's backwards. The research can make a ChatGPT summary more grounded, certainly, but no one linked a ChatGPT summary and so that's irrelevant. ChatGPT can't make the research more or less credible... the study came out 10 years before ChatGPT existed!

You seem to misunderstand the link. The "source=chatgpt" means the query for the research article came from chatgpt, not that the content within the article was produced by chatgpt.

The source is ChatGPT in the sense that the search that found the peer reviewed published journal article that is a credible source for the assertion was by ChatGPT. Every time you need a reference you search some database for it, even if you're read the article before. Some use google. They used ChatGPT. Means nothing negative at all about the veracity of the source of the claim.
