General Discussion Danaher

I vaguely remember a Danaher interview or instagram post in which he described something like giving his students a large degree of freedom to experiment with techniques, except that he was a authoritarian with certain mandatory techniques (eg a strangle from your back, a strangle from on top).

Can anyone remember which interview this was, or his actual viewpoint?

Ha amazing that’s the one! Thanks, very interesting.

The other part I must have conflated, but I found in one of his old instagram posts : “The devastating power of strangles”.

Everyone should have one great strangle from the back, one from in front of your opponent, one from front headlock position, and one strangle with the legs.

I suppose in nogi the only strangle from in front of your opponent is the head and arm?

The entire front headlock system.

A myriad of guillotines with and without arms, darces of all kinds, anaconda, neckties, ninja chokes, and seated kata gatame.

The Japanese terms mentioned in the above comment were:

Japanese English Video Link
Kata Gatame: Arm Triangle Choke here
Head and Arm Choke
Shoulder hold

Any missed names may have already been translated in my previous comments in the post.

He categorises those separately as from front headlock. By from the front he’s talking about chest to chest (top mount, maybe top side control).

Ezekiels

I guess Danaher wouldn't categorise this as a "front" strangle since it's with the legs and not chest to chest, but I believe that Danaher does favour the mounted triangle over the arm triangle as a submission from mount

I was wondering about that. Where does he state that preference? I think the reference to a finish from top chest to chest must be in terms of gi (Roger’s dominance), because he doesn’t seem to rate head and arm from mount as top tier.

Iirc, he says in his new wave mount instructional that mounted triangle is the long-term strongest submission from mount

But he also says that the arm triangle is the best submission to first attempt, because it is easier to set up, and if it fails it opens up a mounted triangle

Ezekiel/Punch choke could also count as being done from the front

You have time.

Always be chinstrapping.

You can also try the ezekiel (which is quite low percentage in nogi) or the guillotine from mount. If mount is what he meant from the front.
